Vastu Means to dwell and Influence. Vastu is the ancient technique that deals with construction of dwellings that are in complete harmony with surrounding environment, cosmic forces and planetary influences. In a more detailed way it helps you to build a house that will bring peace and harmony to its residents. It tells you why the residents or owners of a certain dwelling suffer from a certain problem.

Vastu aims at ensuring the health, happiness, prosperity, and well being of the human being occupying the dwelling and endows him with a sustained peace and tranquility of mind. This science is not just related to the houses but it is also related to industries, commercial dwellings etc. It deals with every kind of construction.Vastu balances the cosmic energies and physical world in order to build the best possible dwelling. The cosmic world includes all the planetary influences, directions and the five elements. The physical world deals with construction material, time duration and cost estimation etc.

According to the ancient sciences our body is made of five elements. We suffer from diseases when our elemental ratio is disturbed. This is the case with our houses too. We cannot live peacefully in a house when its elemental ratio is disturbed. To give you an example the families which suffer from daily clashes between its members generally reside in a house which has an increased flow of air element and fire element.Vastu tells you how to construct a balanced dwelling. It shows that the elements of the house should be balanced according to the elements of its dwellers. It is to be noted that the mathematical principles attributed to Archimedes and Pythagoras can be traced to ancient scriptures written much before these mathematicians.

There are few tips for a peaceful living:

  1. The North east of the house should be lower than the south-west of the house.
  2. Water tank or reservoir should never be built in South-East.
  3. Kitchen should be in the South-east and water reservoir should be on the north-west.
  4. Master bed room should be built in the south-West. There may be differences in father and Son, if son is sleeping in South-west. South-west is the controlling center of the house. In commercial complex; it should be the seat of the boss.
  5. Study table of the children should be kept in east.
  6. South-west which is considered a bad direction is not actually very bad. It is very good for people dealing in medicines, computer hardware, sweet sellers, paint business, chemical business etc.
  7. A place which does depresses you, or which does not give you a joyful feeling is never fit for residing.
  8. Besides one should keep his/her place clean and one should light earthen during morning and evening hours. One should fully light his house during evening hours as it attracts Goddess laxmi.

These are only few general tips. Vastu in actual system requires very extensive study.

8th Grad Science Project Using Agriculture

Test fertilizers to see which one allows grass seed to grow best. Have you ever wondered whether a plant or seed needs anything except soil water and light to grow. Here is your chance to learn for yourself.

Go to your local garden store and pick up 5 pots soil and a fast growing seed like radishes. Also get some soil but make sure you purchase regular clay or top soil. You don’t want to get a soil that already has a fertilizer nutrient mixed into the dirt. Get a very small amount of these fertilizers:

12-12-12

Nitrogen fertilizer nutrients

Phosphorus fertilizer nutrients

Potassium fertilizer nutrients

You can also get some plastic bottoms for the pots but you can easily use a plastic container top like a cottage cheese or sour cream top.

When you get home with your supplies you will want to get started right away as the seeds need several days to a week to sproute.

Arrange the pots on a counter area what will be out of your way from everyday work but will allow for them to have adequate light water and be at the same temperature.

In each pot fill it 2/3 full with the dirt. You may want to put a rock in the bottom hole of the pot before you do this. This will keep the soil from running out when you water the seeds but won’t totally clog it up.

Sprinkle several seeds in each pot and then cover them with about another ¼ inch of soil.

On one pot sprinkle about 1 or 2 tsp 12-12-12 fertilizer. On another pot sprinkle nitrogen fertilizer nutrients and yet another put phosphorus fertilizer nutrients and on the 4th put potassium fertilizer nutrients. The last pot you will leave with no fertilizer at all.

Use a watering can for this if you can and put about an 1/8 cup of water on each pot. If you bought really big pots you will probably need ¼ cup of water.

Now leave the pots alone and water daily. Watch the pots every day and make a visual observation of any changes you notice. Use graph paper. You may also want to use some chalk and mark a number or letter on each pot to easily graph and plot the information.

Notice the color of the plants as they germinate and also note how fast they eash grow. What did you determine by this experiment. What nutrient caused the seeds to sprout the fastest? Which one grew the fastest and which one grew the tallest.

This is a great 7th or 8th grade science project for kids and also high school students.

Agnihotra or Fire Worship Must be Performed Daily

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Yuga Rishi Shriram Sharma Acharya

What does it signify when we say that by looking upon Fire as Purohit (religious preacher) worship and eulogize it? It means that one must imbibe idealistic inspirations embedded in the subtle aspect of fire. The special aspects of fire are: 1) Fire is always manifesting heat and light. Thus fire inspires to heat up our perseverance and hard work and its light inspires to become brilliant and well known in a wholesome way. 2) The flame of fire always points in the upward direction. One may try to pin it down and yet it will elude you and continue its upward march. This inspires to ignore that pressure which tries to induce us to lead a demeaned life of eat drink and be merry. Whatever be the enticement and allurement we must pay no heed to it and instead march in the upward direction of glory and greatness. 3) Any object thrown into fire merges into fire. Our greatness too should be such that whoever contact us becomes great too. Thus a cascading effect of greatness can take place in the entire world. 4) Whenever anything is given to fire it will not hoard but instead after making it gaseous spreads it in all directions of the atmosphere. In the same way how much ever wealth we possess, talent we possess it must be used for world well being without any discrimination or bias. We must refrain from hoarding wealth and skills and instead our inner character should be synonymous with generosity which should translate as selfless activities for world welfare. 5) The remnants of fire are in the form of ash. Why is the ash of Yajna fire applied to the forehead? The answer is that the human being needs to remember that death is round the corner and hence must use this precious human life for wholesome and selfless tasks which not only uplift that person but that he/she contribute like a cog in the wheel towards world welfare activities. These 5 teachings come under the 5 fold Science of Fire or Panchagni Vidya. Thus man is exhorted to deeply understand these precepts and actually manifest them in his day to day dealings with the world. Thus mankind gets a golden chance to lead a Yajna way of life. He or she who imbibes great teachings while performing the symbolic rite of a Yajna in his/her day to day lifestyle attains divine bliss and self fulfillment for sure.

Yajnas are very sacred religious rites and also a great philosophy of life. Yana symbolizes sanctity and spirituality. Fire itself is pure and purifies anything that it contacts even if the object is impure. Fire does nothing for itself and that all its actions are selflessly executed for others’ benefits. The Yajna doer denies himself/herself ghee, sweet meats, grains etc so that he/she can perform a Yajna for everyone’s well being. Fire makes these materials gaseous in form so that when they enter the atmosphere all creatures inhale it and thus benefit both physically and mentally. In this manner the Yajna doer via Ahutis gives subtle ‘food’ to all world creatures and thus acquires Punya or sacred merits. In comparison to food air is more precious. Once people inhale these Yajna fumes imbued with vital force attain bodily strength, good health and a long life span. In comparison to these sacred Yajna fumes the effect of eating healthy food is not very long lasting. Mediocre food can be endured for a certain time span but polluted air cause major problems almost immediately. Yajna involves rendering air very potent by imbuing it with strong vital force. This sacred potent air not only reaches a few people but that a large number of people greatly benefit from it. In comparison to feeding many people delicious food in a banquet potent Yajna fumes ‘served’ to a larger number of people is indeed more beneficial and meritorious by leaps and bounds.

True Agnihotra (fire sacrifice ritual) means imbibing renunciation, self control, sense of service, good behavior, generosity, integrity, ethics, self creation etc. In a certain sense Agnihotra is a spiritual ‘drama’ which on viewing avidly inspires people to imbibe the above listed virtues. Selfish activities are thus replaced by selfless endeavors for world peace and prosperity. There was a time in ancient eras when this Yajna tradition was fully in vogue and hence it was full of joy, advancement and well being of all in the true sense of the term. And yet later when this Yajna attitude was ignored society started moving in one direction which was downfall. Today the world over mankind’s body is alive but inwardly he is like a dead corpse. Once in ancient times King Dashrath requested Vasishthaji to perform the Putreshti Yajna so as to sire children. But Vasishthaji humbly said he was not capable enough to do so and instead, sent King Dashrath to Rishi Shringi. It is not so important how scholarly the Yajna Purohit (priest) is because it is of greater significance how devotional and great he/she is from the character standpoint. Alas today this is just not witnessed virtually anywhere. So called priests are just running after Dkashina (fees offered to priests) and other gifts given to them. Thus the very aim of Yajna that involves sanctifying the psyche of devotees lies totally ignored and unheeded. In turn this is the very reason that despite so many Yajnas performed everywhere true fruits and results of Yajnas elude one and all.

Today it has almost become a rare wonder of the world to find Yajna doers and priests themselves first imbibe greatness and spiritual values in their day to day living and then perform Yajnas that inspire others to follow in their footsteps towards higher pinnacles of glory and divine grandeur. This unfortunately is greatly lacking in this world. In order to overcome this lack the following prayer is executed:

“O Lord! Do please send us such a Guru/preceptor who teaches us the art of conducting mental Yajnas”.

…………………….Atharva Veda

Until we learn to perform Yajnas mentally its real aim remains unfulfilled even if the Havan or fire ritual is executed. The supreme goal of a true Yajna is to surrender ones entire being at the hallowed feet of almighty God. It involves offering (Ahuti) ones mind, intellect, psyche, ego, 10 sense organs (5 of action and 5 of knowledge), 10 Pranas and all our inner wealth to Almighty God i.e. there should be total surrender. This sort of a Yajna has been discussed in the Upanishads as follows:

“In this spiritual Yajna the Yajmaan is the soul, faith is the Yajmaan’s wife, Vedi is the heart, Shikhaa are the Vedas, Hotaa is ones speech, Udgaataa is the vital force, Ardhavyu are the 2 eyes, Brahmaa is the mind, Aagreedhra are the ears and Aahvaneeya is the mouth”.

One such other description is as follows:

“Speech is the Yajna’s Hotaa, eyes are Ardhavyu, vital force is Udgaataa and mind is Brahmaa”.

…………………………Brihadaaranyak Upanishad (3/1/3-6)

The Yajna Purusha is Almighty Lord himself. When like the wood fuel of Yajna fire we surrender our all to the Almighty Lord we become God himself just as materials added to fire merge into it and become fire itself. Yajna means imbibing divine light in our inner being by performing spiritual practices like self study, acting as per God’s commandments, listening to divine inspirations, renunciation and sacrifice, devotion or Bhakti etc. By experiencing the omnipresent Lord in every pore of the cosmos we can abstain from subtle lowly activities. Even the most daring criminal will not act criminally right in front of a police station. In the same way if a person experiences the Lord’s presence 24 X 7 in every nook and corner of the world he will not even think untowardly let alone act unwholesomely. This is because if in his very soul he experiences God ‘staring’ at him how can he harbor tainted thinking which would definitely displease the Lord Almighty? Similarly if in every pore of the external world a person feels God’s presence very tangibly where will he find a ‘secret’ place to execute criminal/illegal activities? Hence he who experiences God’s omnipresence both within and without will harbor goodwill to all object of the world without discriminating whether they are conscious or inert. So this means that a spiritual Yajna is supreme wherein by looking upon Yajna Purusha/Almighty God as all pervasive we imbibe cosmic consciousness in our entire being. Great Yogis are known to persevere intensely so that they can visualize God’s presence everywhere without exception both in their soul and in the external world of name and form. Great scriptures to agree with this saying that the all pervasive Lord eternally dwells in Yajnas:

“The act of Havan is God, Havi is God, Havan is performed in fire who is God himself and God himself performs the Havan. In this manner when in the intellect of any person all actions become divine the person himself merges into God so as to become God incarnate”.

………………………Bhagwad Geeta (4/24)

“I (Almighty God) am Kratu, I am Yajna, I am Swadhaa and I am Mantra/Ghee/fire/Havan”

…………………….Bhagwad Geeta (9/13)

Within the Bhagwad Geeta in order to give us the deep import of spiritual Yajnas the latter have been portioned into smaller categories. They are Daiva Yajna, Brahma Yajna, Atma Yajna, Tapa Yajna, Yoga Yajna, Swadhyaya Yajna, Jnana Yajna, Prana Yajna, Sanyama Yajna etc. It means that while walking on the path of God/self realization and soul advancement all those means utilized are Yajna manifest.

Dravya Yajna helps spread spiritual electric currents in subtle space and thus vile mental taints like hatred, sins, selfish desires, criminality, hard heartedness etc are destroyed. The cascading result seen will be in the form of many problems getting solved. Various problems like mental complexes, stress, fear, tension, worry, anxiety and dire possibilities can be warded off. In ancient times Kings, wealthy class, Rishis, Munis etc conducted gigantic Yajnas as a result the atmosphere in a very widespread area became sacred and pure. In addition national, international and social evils were rooted out completely. The laymen householders performed Yajnas on a smaller scale which helped solve their family and village problems in a big way. For widespread joy, peace, rains, wealth, sound health etc gigantic Yajnas were required. And yet small Yajnas carried out by laymen certainly helped solve their day to day problems maybe in a bit of a limited manner. If you compare the cost of conducting Yajnas know for sure that the benefits both material and spiritual are a thousand fold more and this is not an overstatement. Thus it is crystal clear that Yajnas can never put us into a loss but is a clear win-win situation.

Those who have enough resources should conduct large scale Yajnas. The mouth of fire is the mouth of God. Whatever is fed to fire indeed is divine food. Giving Ahutis in a Yajna means feeding almighty God himself. Since God feeds us all every day it is our duty as his beloved children to conduct worship without being stingy. Of course there are those who are not financially well off and hence they are advised to volunteer in gigantic Yajnas and serve it selflessly. Else individually they can manage small Havans with whatever materials they possess. One more option is for a group of individuals to contribute finances and materials and with this collected Yajna materials perform a big Yajna. In a gigantic Yajna people of less financial means can give their time, service and help in whatever way is possible and thus actively avail the benefits of Yajna.

Agnihotra that is required to be executed daily is very easy to do so. It is not expensive and hence even a lower middle class householder can perform it. Those whose finances are extremely low should perform a Yajna on every Sunday or on a full moon day or on a moonless night with whatever materials they possess. Even the dos and don’ts of these small Havans are not burdensome at all. In the book called Gayatri Yajna Vidhaan all this has been detailed. On its basis without taking help from a priest any Dwija can easily perform Havans. If a person is totally unaware of the dos and don’ts they should offer only Ghee Ahutis by saying ‘Swaha’ every time a Gayatri Mantra is chanted. If in some form or the other the Yajna tradition flourishes it will be a great service to Indian culture. This seemingly small ritual will not only purify your household atmosphere but that the psyche of all family members will be rendered pure and taintless. Wherever Yajnas are performed regularly sin does not enter these households. Ghosts, ill fate, poverty and stress are totally rooted out. Agnihotra pleases demigods and they in turn shower us with both material and spiritual bliss.

Not from any standpoint can Yajnas incur losses of any kind. Ordinarily the wealth utilized to perform even small Yajnas is like depositing it in the ‘banks’ managed by demigods. They in turn return this wealth to you with a very big percentage of interest at the most appropriate time when that person most requires it. More important and precious are those Havan performed as per scriptural injunctions and observing apt dos and don’ts. Such Yajnas can be compared to divine weapons (they induce creativity and never destruction). It is a sure shot method of attaining divine help. In ancient times Yajnas were known to shower its doer with desired fruits. Valiant warriors imbibed a lot of divine energy via Yajnas and thus became invincible. Yogis perform penance performing Yajnas too and thus attain Self/God Realization. Yajnas are fathers of all Ridhi-Sidhi i.e. material/divine forces. Vedas call Yajnas ‘Kamadhuk’ i.e. one who fulfils man’s needs and wards off various obstacles on our path of material/spiritual progress.

For Gayatri devotees Yajnas are imperative and hence they must continue this tradition in a big way. It is the prime duty of every Dwija to maintain a Yajna atmosphere of ones home and psyche in particular. An ordinary Homa too is quite beneficial. It purifies the atmosphere of ones home, overcomes diseases and the self is protected from dire invasions. Of course it also shows that if Yajnas performed with special aims following proper scriptural injunctions will be beneficial manifold times. Yajna is a science wherein a scientific admixture of the 5 elements (earth, water, fire, wind, space) manifests intense divine energy. This energy is conjoined to Dvi Murdhaa, Dvi Naasik, Sapt Hast, Dvi Mukha, Sapta Jihvaa, Uttar Mukh, Koti Dwaadash Moortyaa, Dvi Pancha Shatkalaa Yutam etc. In this statement of deep import it is indicated that the Murdhaa of Yajna fire is both material and spiritual. These areas can be made successful gigantically. The gross and subtle aspect of nature is the nose of Yajnas and one can gain mastery over it. All the 7 glories are the hands of Yajna fire and the Vaam and Dakshin Maarg are its 2 mouths. The 7 worlds are its tongue and all the special qualities of these worlds reside in the moth of Yajna fire. The mouth of Yajna fire harbors the magnetic center of the North Pole. The 52 Kalaas of Yajna are such that Ravan the demon became extremely powerful despite imbibing a very small number of these Kalaas. Hence imagine if all Kalaas manifest and are utilized wholesomely how powerful and terrific mankind can become akin to an inferno. Thus the greatness of Yajnas is limitless. Even a minor application manifests stupendous results. For Gayatri devotees Yajnas are like divine fathers and must be revered from the bottom of ones pure heart.

The Law of Attraction and the Science of Getting Rich

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

What are you thinking about right now? The Law of Attraction states that “whatever we think about, we bring about”. This law may initially seem like new age fluff but believe it or not, there are scientific merits to this proposition. The top quantum physicists of our time have discovered that our universe and our reality is very much directed by the “observer”.

When studying quantum particles (the smallest observable unit of matter), these scientists discovered that such particles behave in accordance with the person conducting the experiment. It the scientists “predict” that quantum particles behave in a certain way, they do. And yet, if the scientists “predict” that quantum particles behave in another way, they do. It is the “observer” that dictates the outcome of the experiment!

What does all this mean for us normal people? Well actually, these scientific experiments has far reaching implications for us as our world is made up of these same quantum particles! In this case, we are the “observer” the director and hence the creator of our reality, our world and our experience.

So, be careful of what you think about! for example, have you thoughts ever begun with the following phrases:

I don’t understand…

I don’t want…

I’m frustrated that…

I hate my…

I can’t figure out …

I’m stressed about…

I’m worried that…

I should be able to… but I can’t…

Why am I having so much trouble?

The Law of Attraction indifferent to the words preceding your thought. Whatever you think about you will attract into your life. When you think “I don’t understand why bad things always happen to me?”, you are “attracting” bad things into your life. When you think “I want to get out of debt”, you are attracting more debt into your life. When you think “I’m worried I will get sick”, you are attracting sickness into your life! The Law of Attraction brings about what you focus on even if it is not what you want. Get it?

If you understand this principle, here are some examples of how to make the law of attraction work to support you rather than to act against you. Try observing your thoughts and changing your thinking in the following way:

“I want to get out of debt” to “I want to earn amazing riches”

“I hate my boss” to “I look forward to owning my own business”

“I don’t understand why he is so lazy” to “I love it when he helps out around the house”

“I’m stressed about this project” to “I always create amazing results in my projects”

“I’m worried about getting sick” to “I experience vibrant health daily”

Now that we have a better understanding of the Law of Attraction, it is no surprise why so many people struggle with regards to money. It is been said that “the rich get richer while the poor get poorer”. This is actually the Law of Attraction in action. Because the wealthy have money, they often think about how to best use their money and hence they attract more money. The poor on the other hand often think about their present lack of money and unfortunately, that also attracts lack into their lives. Currently, 96% of the world’s wealth is being earned by just 1% of the population!

To address this issue, the main teachers behind the movie is launching a program is called “The Science of Getting Rich” and it is based on employing the law of attraction to create wealth. This amazing program is based on the principles and philosophies outlined in a book of the same title written in 1910 by Wallace D Wattles. This is the same book that inspired the movie.

What is the Science of Getting Rich about? Well in the words of Wallace D. Wattles, “The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects. Therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich.” The Science of Getting Rich Seminar is all about teaching how to do things in this “certain” way to create wealth.

Astrology – Science, Art or Conjecture?

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Astrology is defined in various ways and while many call it a science, others call it an art. Astrology refers to the study of the movement and position of the stars, moon and the planets and how to they influence events and people on earth. While skeptics and believers abound by plenty, astrology is one field that is either revered or hated, with generally not much lying in between. However, most people do not mind reading their daily or weekly horoscopes as a means of entertainment.

In today’s time, we generally think of the signs of the zodiac whenever astrology is mentioned. However, this is not all there is to astrology and it is a field that is as vast and deep as it is tough to interpret and understand. Astrology is an extremely old science and for centuries people have taken its help in order to make better decisions. Unfortunately, it has been commercialized to such extents that people who have no idea whatsoever about astrology have branded themselves astrologers in an effort to make an easy buck. This has resulted not just in astrology becoming a cause for humor; it has also led to real students and experts of astrology being ridiculed.

That elements on the earth are influenced by planetary movements is a fact proven by the monthly movements of the tide in response to the position of the moon. Just think that if the moon can influence the movement of the largest water bodies on earth to such an extent, would it not have an influence on human beings who themselves are composed of more than seventy per cent water?

Since ages, the Farmers Almanac, which is based on astrology, has been used as a guide to determine planting and harvesting times. At the same time, an extremely large number of animals are influenced by astrological cycles, and science has already proven that oysters, turtles and salmon carry out the functions of reproduction based on astrological movements. At the same time, most of us who do not have a keen interest or belief in astrology expect people with a certain sun sign to behave in a certain way only to be proved right most of the time.

Astrology today is a much maligned and much misused science, but to say that it has no substance whatsoever would be completely wrong. Therefore, while it is not very wise to follow astrology blindly and consider it responsible for everything good or bad that happens to you, at the same time, it is also not prudent to discount astrology as a bogus science.

Can Learning Languages Help You Better Understand Science and Technology?

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

by Philip Yaffe

“I was 24 years old when I first began thinking and speaking in a foreign language. It was like being released from prison. I saw my cell door swinging open and my mind flying free. That was over 40 years ago, but the picture is as fresh now as if it had just happened.”

I am a linguistic iconoclast. Throughout my life (I am now in my seventh decade), I have heard the mantra that learning a foreign language gives you invaluable insights into the cultures of the people who speak it. I don’t believe it.

In addition to my native English (I grew up in Southern California), I have become fluent in two other languages and have a good working knowledge of three more. I doubt that all this effort has given me any insights into the cultures of the people who speak these languages. At least no insights that I couldn’t have acquired more easily in 30 – 60 minutes by reading a well-written essay or in a few hours by attending well-crafted social-cultural lectures.

By contrast, I have acquired a deeper understanding of science.

What does science have to do with language? Actually, very little. But it has a lot to do with flexible thinking. And this is where science and language learning converge.

Contrary to the common belief, science is not about certainty but rather uncertainty. Good scientists are always looking for what has been overlooked, i.e. they are always searching for surprises and welcome them when they happen. They know that moment we believe a phenomenon is “natural” and must be that way, or that it is “unnatural” and cannot be that way, we are either heading for trouble or missing out on something important.

For example, Albert Einstein investigated the “unnatural” belief that a beam of light in space must always have the same velocity; other scientists had spent decades trying to disprove this. He wanted to see where this “unnatural” might lead. In fact, it lead to e = mc², the formula for atomic energy, and transformed the world.

It is not necessary to be a genius like Einstein (who spoke German, French, Italian and English), or even a scientist at all, in order to profit from the mind-stretching benefits of learning foreign languages. In our daily lives we all make assumptions about how the world works; often we are not even aware that we are making them. And that’s the danger. If we are insensitive to our assumptions, we are almost certain to end up believing things that aren’t true and refusing to believe things that are true.

Learning languages can help correct this parlous state of affairs. How? Quite simply, because nowhere else are our assumptions more rapidly and forcefully challenged by other assumptions about what is or isn’t natural that are equally valid.

Here are some simple examples.

1; Trailing Adjectives

It is “natural” to put adjectives before a noun, e.g. “an unidentified flying object”. Well not really. Many languages put adjectives after the noun, e.g. “un objet volant non-identifie”. You could argue the “naturalness” of these conflicting practices both ways. In English, we prefer to describe something before identifying what it is, as if to build up the suspense. In French, they prefer to identify what it is first and describe it afterwards. Who is right?

2. Optional Pronouns

English speakers take it for granted that constructing a sentence requires a subject and a verb. The subject can be either a proper noun (John talks) or a pronoun (He talks). If you have any acquaintance with Spanish, you know that in this language the pronoun is usually not necessary. You would still say “Juan habla” (John talks); however, in most cases you would simply say “Habla” for “He talks”. In fact, if you use a pronoun where it isn’t required (“El habla”), you would be committing a serious error.

3. No Distinction between Male and Female

English speakers learning French are often puzzled by the language’s apparent inability to distinguish between male and female. For example, “This is his book” and “This is her book” in French are both “C’est son livre”. The possessive adjective “son” means both “his” and “her”. If it is absolutely necessary to distinguish between “his” book and “her” book, there is a way of doing so. However, it is employed only when absolutely necessary.

But isn’t it always absolutely necessary? It seems so unnatural not to specify whether the book’s owner is male or female. Isn’t this fundamental information?

It may seem so, but it isn’t. By the same logic, it should be fundamental information to distinguish between male and female when saying “This is their book”, but we don’t. “This is your book” can be either male, female, or both, but we never specify. Even “This is my book” can be either male or female, but again we don’t specify.

Having grown up speaking only English, you probably have never noticed this inconsistency in the language. Neither had I. I simply knew that is was “natural” to distinguish between his and her book, until a Frenchman asked me why. I couldn’t tell him.

4. Inclusive and Explicit Forms of “You”

In English, we have only one way of saying “you”, which covers all situations. Many languages have several ways of saying it, notably the “formal you” and the “familiar you”. English used to have a familiar “you” (thou), but it has essentially disappeared. But in French and Spanish, for example, it is still widely used, making speakers of these languages feel that English is somehow “incomplete”.

Spanish speakers are particularly poorly served. In their language, not only do they have a formal and familiar “you”, they have them both in the singular and plural. In other words, in Spanish there are four ways of saying “you”: formal singular (one person), familiar singular (one person), formal plural (several persons), familiar plural (several persons). For Spanish speakers, having these four options is natural and necessary; not having them in English is unnatural and constricting.

5. Exclusive and Explicit Verb Forms

English has very few verb forms. For example, in the present tense we say “I cook”, “You cook”, “He cooks”, “She cooks”, “We cook”, “They cook”. In other words, there are only two forms of the verb, “cook” and “cooks”, depending on whom we are talking about. In the past tense English has only one verb form, e.g. “I cooked”, “You cooked”, “He cooked”, “She cooked”, “We cooked”, “They cooked”. Likewise in the future tense; everyone “will cook”.

In other languages this is quite unnatural, because they use distinct forms for each different person being talked about. For example, in French and Spanish “I” is associated with one verb form, “you” with a distinctly different verb form, “we” with yet another form, etc. And of course there are distinct verb forms for the “familiar you” and “formal you” (singular in French, and both singular and plural in Spanish).

But doesn’t all these differences make other languages significantly more complex than English? Yes, indeed. However, they also make them significantly more precise. For speakers of these languages, it is crucially important to make these distinctions, because this is how their minds have been trained to work. Just as it is crucially important for English speakers to distinguish between “his” and “hers”, because this is how our minds have been trained to work.

Examples of these different ways of doing things from one language to another are endless. Each time we encounter them our mind opens up a little bit more, because the unexpressed assumptions we all carry around with us are continually being challenged.

Growing up in California, I used to be strongly opposed to language learning because it seemed so difficult and pointless. I have since changed my mind. I now strongly advocate language learning. Not because knowing a foreign language teaches us very much about others, but because it teaches us so much about ourselves.

Accepting that language learning is more about mind expansion than culture implies that language teaching must be fundamentally reformed.

I live in Belgium, where speaking two or three languages is the norm rather than the exception. This is generally true throughout Europe. In these countries, teaching languages in the belief that people will actually use them makes sense. The mind-expanding aspects of the effort come along as a welcomed bonus.

However for English speakers in general, and Americans in particular, it is almost impossible to learn to speak foreign languages because it is so difficult to practice them outside of the classroom. Here, the mind-expanding aspects of language learning should be the primary objective, and courses designed and taught in consequence.

If this were done, I believe that the American fear – and dare I say loathing – of other languages could be reversed. The schools would lay down the foundations of a language without trying to force students into the hopeless and demoralizing task of trying to speak it.

With this foundation firmly in place, when a person traveled to an area where that language is spoken, he would be able to rapidly turn his passive knowledge into active use. Even better, even if he traveled to an area with a totally different language, he would understand how languages work and therefore be ready to learn the new language rapidly and without fear.

Finally, the general aversion – and again dare I say loathing – many monolingual English speakers have of science and technology might also moderate. A mind made flexible by language learning would find it much easier to grasp and appreciate scientific principles than one still imprisoned in single-language rigidity.

In an age dominated by science and technology, surely this would be a benefit of ineffable importance.

Study For A Forensic Science Degree Online

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Television programs like Cold Case Files and CSI have prompted an increase in the publics fascination with forensic science. What is not generally known, however, is that forensic science is a field that involves much more than is shown on television. Everyone knows that forensic scientists work in an area of law and are responsible for examining evidence to solve crimes. But they do more than work in labs, testing samples of DNA. Forensic scientists also visit crime scenes, study the crime locations, and are witnesses in court cases.

Sometimes, these scientists can make mistakes if they dont follow established procedures, which include keeping exact files on the evidence in a case. In some cases, these mistakes can have a negative impact on innocent lives. Several individuals have been sentenced to death on the basis of expert forensic evidence and testimony. Later on, it was discovered that these people were innocent, and the real criminals were apprehended. In these cases, science save an innocent life, and the courts could provide justice. Recently, over eleven individuals were released from a Chicago jail after new forensic evidence showed they were innocent. These people had already spent years in jail as a result of mistakes made in the legal system.

You can get a degree in forensic science online in just a few years. To earn a degree, you need to have a previous degree in biology, physics, chemistry, or physical science in order to register. Some online colleges require a minimum of a bachelors degree in one of these subjects before you can begin courses in forensic science. If you want to find a degree program in this field you should consult organizations such as the American Board of Criminalistic-ABC, American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors-ASCLD, National Forensic Science Tech Center-NSFTC, International Association of Forensic Science, and International Association for Identification-IAI and International Society for Forensic Genetics, and International Association for Identification-IAI and International Society for Forensic Genetics.

Degrees in forensic science may cover budget analysis, forensic accounting, working in a morgue or hospital, studying DNA, or working with computers. There are many areas in which you can work after getting a forensic science degree. Computer forensics involves investigations of evidence by tracking information via computer technology. It is a new field, but expertise in this area increases daily. Computer forensics involves extracting data from various media and presenting the evidence collected to the courts. This field uses extensive software programs and applications. The FBI, CIA, and other law enforcement agencies use forensic science with computers to resolve their cases.

An online forensics degree requires more work and specific background education than other online degrees, but if you want an exciting career with many opportunities and a chance to make a difference, do not let this keep you from pursuing on online degree in forensic science.

Science, Healthy Lifestyles, Happiness – Eight Steps to Bliss, From Buddha to Science

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Scientists at the University of California have now measured thousands of people and found there were eight common variables among those who reported the happiest and most fulfilling lives.

These same people reported best health for their age group, were active and helpful in local volunteer work, they tended to believe in a God and an afterlife, and they also had no doubt they were going there, but were in no hurry.

These life winners tended to believe in a God and an afterlife, and had no doubt they were going there, and were in no hurry. These eight attributes to bliss are here for you to follow.

Count Your Blessings. Commit acts of kindness. Savor the joys of Life. Thank a mentor. Learn to forgive. Stay close to family and friends. Take care of your body. Develop strategies to cope with stress and hardship.

We suggest making an eight day game of it with those who you spend your daily life or earn your daily bread. You be the Count or Countess of Blessings. Live the part or you will not remember, which is your fast track to bliss.

Otherwise, if you lack the attention span of Buddha, you could meditate till the cows turn holy and still not imprint these eight virtues.

By the way, that is Hindu belief which Buddha, like Jesus did not accept. But back to bliss, if you act this road map out until you can walk it blindfold, act it out. Make sure you include the name of everyone hearing your memory building exercise for your advanced psychology class.

You can explain that it is better not to talk about it, or we forget, we need to go deeper and imprint until it “sticks”, as science reports. You are in quick mode to bliss, so it is in your mind, yet mysterious because we cannot witness the miracle connections inside our frontal lobes and cortex that allow these circuits to stay green light on.

That is our search on this mission, yet you do not want to seem to have looped out so far that you have joined a cult. In Beijing you would be hauled off by police, but on this side of that narrowing pond we should be OK Joe with this.

Cynics will convince themselves that you have some devious plot, and from now on you are then going to fake nice and serene the rest of your working days. See how some might hate you already?

Have fun, let your boss know the truth: you are trying to get into the bliss button and you have been given the route. It’s your secret. At least until the eighth day.And by then you will need a rest, but do not revert.

If the cat gets pushed off the couch, you may be having a recoil call from hell. Change channels quickly. Pat kitty till she purrs. She is close to a self centered jailer so it is good practice. For you both, purr in harmony. Life is only beginning anew. That direction, Mr and Miss Mew, is up to you. Purr or claw your way up, live long with friends, or die rich alone and nasty. Scrooge, Cratchet, Tiny Tim or the loving nephew: who your model is, you become.

Careful, you are playing with you mortal soul as well as bliss on earth. Snarl or smile, the world is pretty much going to do what it will do. It is how you greet life and people anew each day, may well determine how those Gates Above swing open or not for me. Or You. It will be too late when we stand in line trembling or beaming. Beam down here first, from Buddha to Jesus to modern science to you and I. No time to waste, I am late for a very important date.
