Bible Versus Quran Versus Sciences, (61) Do you not See?

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Prof.dr. Ibrahim Khalil

“Do you not see” in the Bible:

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Jeremiah 7:17

“Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

Matthew 24:2

And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”

Mark 8:18

“HAVING EYES, DO YOU NOT SEE? AND HAVING EARS, DO YOU NOT HEAR? And do you not remember,

“Do you not see” in the Quran:

The Quran used “Do you not see” to talk about four main scientific issues, five historical topics and 11 theological themes

Do you not see and the Sciences in the Quran:

The Quran used “Do you not see” to talk about the Creation of the heavens and the earth, the Sun, Moon, Day and Night, Shadow, the Sky, Clouds, Rain, Water, Plants and the Seas and Ships

A) Creation of the heavens and the earth

Surah 14:19

Do you not see that Allah has created the heavens and the earth with truth? he can put you away if he will and bring into being a new creation;

Surah 22:18

Do you not see that to Allah prostrate all who are in the heavens and all who are in the earth, the sun and the moon, the stars and the mountains, the trees and the beasts, and many people? and many deserve the punishment. he who is abased by Allah has none to honor him. Allah does what he will

Surah 24:41

Do you not see how Allah is exalted by those in the heavens and earth, and the birds with outspread wings? He knows its prayers and its exaltations and Allah has knowledge of the things they do.

Surah 31:20

Do you not see how Allah has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and the earth, and lavished on you his visible and unseen favors? Yet some people would argue about Allah without knowledge, or guidance, or an illuminating book. ‘

Surah 71:15

Do you not see how Allah created the seven heavens one above the other,

B) Sun, Moon, Day and Night, Shadow

Surah 31:29

Do you not see how Allah causes the night to enter into the day and the day enter into the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running to a named term? Allah is aware of what you do.

Surah 25:45

Do you not see how your lord stretches the shadow? had it been his will, he could have made it constant. then he appointed the sun to be a guide to it;

C) Sky, Clouds, Rain, Water, Plants

Surah 24:43

Do you not see how Allah drives the clouds, then gathers them and converts them into a mass, then you see rain coming from the midst of them? and he sends down out of heaven mountains in which there is hail, pelting with it whom he will, and turning it away from whom he will. the flash of its lightning almost snatches away the sight.

Surah 22:63

Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the sky and in the morning the earth becomes green? Allah is subtle, the aware.

Surah 35:27

Do you not see how Allah sends down water from the sky and with it brings forth different colored fruits? in the mountains there are paths of various colors, of white and red, and jet-black.

Surah 39:21

Do you not see how Allah sends down water from the sky and threaded it as springs in the earth? Then, he brings forth plants of various colors, after which they wither, and you see them turning yellow, and then he makes them into broken stubble. surely, in this there is a reminder for those of understanding.

D) Seas and Ships

Surah 22:65

Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you all that is on the earth, and the ships which run upon the sea by his command? he holds the sky back lest it should fall upon the earth except by his permission. Allah is gentle to people, the most merciful.

Surah 31:31

Do you not see how the ships run upon the sea, by the favor of Allah so that he may show you his signs? Surely, there are signs in this for every steadfast, thankful person.

Do you not see and a Parable in the Quran:

Surah 14:24

Do you not see how Allah sets forth a parable that a good deed is like a good tree, its roots are firm and its branches are very high?

Do you not see: Allah Knows, Hears and Sees all things?

Surah 58:7

Do you not see that Allah knows that which is in the heavens and the earth? There is no secret talk between three but he is the fourth of them; nor between five but he is the sixth of them; nor between fewer or more but he is with them wherever they are. Then, on the day of resurrection, he will inform them of what they have done. Surely, Allah has knowledge of all things.

Do you not see and the History of Man in the Quran:

Surah 2:243

Do you not see those who went out from their homes in their thousands cautious of death? Allah said to them: ‘die, ‘ and then he revived them. Surely, Allah is bountiful to the people, but most people do not thank

Surah 2:246

Do you not see the congregation of the children of Israel who demanded of one of their prophets after (the death of) Moses? ‘raise up for us a king, ‘ they said, ‘and we will fight in the way of Allah. ‘he replied: ‘might it be that if fighting is written for you, you will not fight? ”Why we shouldn’t fight in the way of Allah, ‘ they replied, ‘when we and all our children have been driven from our dwellings? ‘yet, when fighting was written for them all except for a few, turned away. and Allah has knowledge of the harm doers.

Surah 2:258

Do you not see he who argued with Abraham about his lord that Allah had given him the kingship! when Abraham said: ‘my lord is he who revives, and causes to die. ‘ he said: ‘i revive, and cause to die. ‘Abraham said: ‘Allah brings up the sun from the east; so you bring it from the west! ‘Then he who disbelieved became pale. Allah does not guide the nation, the harm doers.

Surah 89:6

Do you not see how your lord dealt with “Aad”?

Surah 105:1

Do you not see how Allah dealt with the companions of the elephant?

Do you not see and the Unbelievers in the Quran:

Those who deny the Quran, Muhammad and Islam

Surah 40:69

Do you not see how those who dispute about the verses of Allah how they are turned about?

Do you not see and the People of the Books in the Quran:

Surah 3:23

Do you not see those who have received a portion of the book being called to the book of Allah, that it might judge between them, and some turned away, swerving aside?

Surah 4:44

Do you not see those to whom a portion of the book was given purchasing error and wishing that you should err from the path?

Surah 4:51

Do you not see those to whom a portion of the book was given believing in (the two statutes of Mecca) jibt and taghout (Satan) and say to those who disbelieve: ‘those are more guided on the way than those who believe.’

Do you not see and the Hypocrites in the Quran:

Surah 4:49

Do you not see those who exalt themselves? Rather, Allah purifies whom he will and they shall not be wronged a single tissue that covers a date stone.

Surah 14:28

Do you not see those who exchanged the favor of Allah with disbelief and landed their nation in a house of ruin?

Surah 4:60

Do you not see those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you? They desire to be judged by the idol, although they have been commanded to disbelieve it. But Satan desires to lead them astray into far error.

Surah 4:77

Do you not see those to whom it has been said: ‘restrain your hands, establish your prayers and pay the obligatory charity. ‘ then, as soon as fighting is written for them, there is a party of them fearing people as they would fear Allah, or with stronger fear. and they say: ‘our lord, why have you written fighting for us, why not postpone us to a near term? ‘Say: ‘the pleasure of this life is little. the everlasting life is better for the cautious. You shall not be wronged a single tissue (of the fine skin that covers a date stone).

Surah 19:83

Do you not see how we send down to the unbelievers Satans who prick them?

Surah 58:8

Do you not see those who were forbidden to talk in secrecy together? They return to that which they are forbidden and talk secretly together in sin and hatred, and in disobedience to the messenger. then, when they come to you they greet you with greetings with which Allah does not greet you, and they say within themselves: ‘why does Allah not punish us for what we say? ‘Hell suffices them, they shall be roasted, an evil arrival!

Surah 59:11

Do you not see the hypocrites? They say to their brothers among the people of the book who disbelieve, ‘if they expel you, we will go with you. we will never obey anyone against you. if they fight against you we will certainly help you. ‘But Allah bears witness that they are, without doubt, liars.

Back to the main topic of my series of articles (1- 61); this is my question to you smart readers: “Is the Quran quoted from the Bible “? And which book preceded the modern Sciences?

Ayahuasca & Visionary Plants – Companions to the Soul

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Howard G Charing

Writing from my own personal perspective from my years of work and research in the Amazon Rainforest with the shamans and curanderos who drink the visionary plant brew called Ayahuasca. I use the term ‘shaman’ as a convenience as this title has only been ‘imported’ from the West into the Amazon quite recently in the past thirty years or so. A more appropriate general term could be ‘vegatilista’ or a seer and healer who work with plants from not only the physical or medicinal aspect but who are also in communion with the soul of the plant. in addition there are many ‘sub’ specialities, so a shaman who primarily works with chonta (a hard palm wood) is known as a chontero , a shaman who works with the aromas and scents of the plants is called a perfumero, and a shaman who works with ayahuasca is known as an ayahuasqero.

Ayahuasca is a combination of two plants (although other plants are added to elicit certain visionary experiences or healing purposes). This mixture of two plants the Ayahuasca vine and the Chacruna leaf, operate in a specific manner with our neuro-chemistry. The leaf contains the neuro transmitters of the tryptamine family (identical to those present in our brain) and the vine itself acts as an inhibitor to prevent our body’s enzymes from breaking the tryptamines down thereby making it inert. Science defines this as the MAOI effect (Monoamine Anti Oxide Inhibitor) and forms the basis for many of the widespread anti-depressant pharmaceutical medication such as Prozac and Seroxat. This MAOI principal was only discovered by Western Science in the 1950’s, yet interestingly this very principle has been known by the plant shamans for thousands of years, and when you ask the shamans how they knew this, the response is invariably “the plants told us”.

Ayahuasca has revealed to me more of the great dream of the Earth, and how disconnected we have become from our relationship with the living planet. I experienced the evolutionary process of DNA. Shown that many of the problems that we experience as a species is because we are primates, and even though humankind has done everything possible to dissociate ourselves from our animal origins, we remain driven by our animal glands and hormonal systems. Yet at the same time, we are in harmony with our higher state of consciousness that approaches that of dolphins, who are aware and in conscious communion as part of a soul mind.

This great question, the mystery of the communion of mind, soul, and body is a search that we humans have been on since we first raised our eyes to the night sky in wonder. Some of the ancient myths of the jungle from the Ashuar people of the Upper Amazon tell us of this separation, the myth of the ‘Moon Man’ as collected by Alonso Del Rio from Peru is such a one;

‘In the time of the ancestors there was a ladder, like a rope which connected the world of the Ashuar with the upper world. Here lived other beings just like the Ashuar but they were spirits. These beings were very powerful and could transform themselves into anything they wanted. One day Moon-man cut this ladder so that the people could no longer communicate with their spirits above, and thus they lost their power. ‘

In the Ashuar tradition the Moon Man is associated with the analytical mind and it is “rational thinking” therefore which has severed our sacred connection to the cosmic mind. This legend therefore speaks of humanity’s need to reunite with the consciousness of the universe, using the rope (ayahuasca) to climb our way back to the oneness we once knew. Only then can we re-enchant the world through imagination and inspiration. If we look deeply into our hearts can we say that we are any different from the indigenous peoples of the rainforest? The reflections of Carl Jung in his book, Modern Man in Search of a Soul point to the very same dilemma as the peoples of the Amazon;

“If we are still caught by the old idea of an antithesis between mind and matter, the present state of affairs means an unbearable contradiction; it may even divide us against ourselves. But if we can reconcile ourselves with the mysterious truth that spirit is the living body seen from within, and the body the outer manifestation of the living spirit – the two really being one — then we can understand why it is that the attempt to transcend the present level of consciousness must give its due to the body. We shall also see that belief in the body cannot tolerate an outlook that denies the body in the name of the spirit.”

The visionary plants and ancient traditions of the plant shamans reveal a hidden universe, in which the separation between the physical and the unseen universe is an illusion caused by our limited sensory perception. The body and soul permeates and infuses each other. The plant teachers show us a path to an expanded consciousness and communion with our sacred source, our soul companion.

Teaching Science Through Cooking

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Cooking is an art as well as a necessity of our lives. It can bring great joy to both the cook, as well as those who partake of the well-prepared meal and it can also be a valuable and nutritious addition to our overall health and well being. One might think that cooking and science have little in common, yet that is simply not true, as cooking offers a wide variety of opportunities to teach science to our young. By sharing quality time cooking with our children, they can learn valuable lessons not only in the ethic of work and responsibility but also in the area of science.

Experimenting In The Kitchen

Simple scientific experiments can be conducted within the comfortable confines of ones own kitchen and the end results can be edible! What an approach to science! Yet because the students are learning in a comforting and enjoyable atmosphere, it is not like the stifled book-learning approach to science. Cooking offers the child a hands on and tangible experience, while at the same time teaching them a life skill they can use daily. Children from kindergarten to college can gain practical applications and life-long knowledge by using this approach. Some example of fun experiments parents can incorporate include making candyfloss and ice cream. Making ice cream, for example, allows the exploration of the freezing point of matter. One can also talk about the role of temperature, whipping and foaming during the process. Children can learn a wide range of science concepts while they enjoy the learning process. What is more is that they get to enjoy a tasty treat at the end of the process.

Difficult chemistry concepts such as radiation, convection, conduction, energy and carbohydrate chemistry may seem overwhelming to many students, yet exploring and appreciating these science concepts during our food preparation can makes it a fun and exciting adventure. For a start, one can study the various forms of heat transfer and their different roles it play in the cooking process. With regard to specific foods, milk and dairy products can be discussed as you use them in your cooking, such as how the cows produce milk, what milk is made of, the nutrients within the milk and the difference between fermented and non-fermented products.

Plants can also be easily incorporated into our discussions. Cooking vegetables is a science itself. Even preseving them, such as kimchi, is an excellent introduction to food nutrition and preservation. By the way, talking about kimchi, in it lives a host of live organisms which one can conduct experiments on. Moreover, it also gives you an excellent opportunity to talk about Korean culture and food. Concepts such as osmosis, pH value, density of the food, as well as dissecting the vegetables to identify plant tissue and structure can be explored too.

With the wide variety of creative ideas for experimentation, the kitchen is a wonderful learning laboratory for people of all ages.

Science Fair Projects – Do Plants Like Music?

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Much has been said and argued about music affecting the growth of plants. Back in 1973 it was reported that geraniums grew faster when they were played Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. In 1991 someone reported that he had stimulated plants to generate more protein by playing audible notes which produced vibrations occurring in molecules during protein formation.

Another experimenter reported that young bean plants subjected to heavy metal music grew faster than those subjected to soft classical music. This result was mentioned to a renowned biologist who commented that one should get the same result using an electric fan in place of a loudspeaker with music. He said that plants in nature grow well and strong with mechanical agitation such as wind and storm. Therefore one might do the right experiment and draw the wrong conclusion.

Well it appears that there is only way to settle the argument and find out once and for all whether plant growth is affected by music. Ready? We’re going to do this project with seeds and with plants.

You are going to need five pots and saucers, potting soil, water, a CD or cassette player and four different types of music. You might try classical (soft), hard rock, country, and Sinatra. You can substitute different music but make your selection of very different kinds of music. You will also need ten bean seeds, five plants of similar type and size, labels, marking pen, camera, and paper.

Get five plants of the same size and type, and put them where they get sun from the east. Every day, play music for twenty minutes to each plant. Each plant will get a different type of music. You can try country music on one plant, and with the others, play classical, rock and oldies. Water the plants every other day. One of the plants will get no music. This is your control.

Photograph your plants at the beginning of the experiment, and keep careful records of which plant gets what kind of music. At the same time that you started with the plants, take ten bean seeds and plant two seeds in each pot. You will need five pots in all. Water as needed. Make sure that each gets exposed to one of the four different types of music. One pot should hear no music. Keep careful records, take lots of photographs. Be sure to give all plants the same amount of water and light. After one month, check and see which plant is the tallest.

Science Experiments and Chemistry Chuckles

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Science experiments in chemistry reveals the oddest fact — molecules have down-right silly names. One doesn’t usually think of chemistry topics as humorous but one look at these molecule names and you’ll change your thinking on that. Try some of these names for Chemistry Science chuckles.

One molecule is called “arsole”. It is the arsenic equivalent of pyrole, and is occasionally seen as a side group in the form of organic arsolyls.

Another molecule is called “Adamantane”. This often brings laughter as Adam Ant was an English pop star in the early 1980’s famous for his silly songs and strange make up. How did they ever think of this one.

“Bastardane” is a close relative of “Adamantane”. It’s proper name is “ethano-bridged noradamante”. It was a variation of the standard structure and became know as the unwanted child. I have to imagine that the lineage is somewhat in doubt.

Another doozy is “Buckminster Fullerene”. This soccer ball-shaped molecule won a Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1996. It is of course, named after the architect Buckminster Fuller, who designed the geodesic dome. It is sometimes referred to as “Bucky Ball”, and is also known as “Footballene”. Why was this so special as to win a Nobel prize, I do not know.

“Megaphone” gets its name from being both a constituent of “niba Megaphylla” and a ketone. This one shouts loudly in order to be heard.

“Munchnones” could be the favorite of the Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz, but they are ring structures in which the charges are delocalized. We represent the ring structure guild, the ring structure guild, the ring structure guild.

“Cummingtonite” got its name from where it was found, Cummington, Mass. For those who want to know, it is a magnesium iron silicate hydroxide. In case I cannot meet you in the afternoon, I am coming tonight.

“Putrescine” originates in putrefying and rotting flesh, and is the smell of death. It is usually associated with “cadaverine” named after the cadavers that give rise to the rotting flesh.

“Dickite” discovered by a geologist whose last name was “Dick” is a clay like mineral and is used in ceramics and as paint filler.

“Moronic” acid is of interest to people studying archaeological relics, shipwrecks and ancient Egyptian jars. Ask me why it is called “Moronic” acid and I cannot answer hopefully not making me a moron.

The Fuka region of Southern Japan has given birth to “Fukalite”, which is a form of calcium silico-carbonate.

A plant hormone which causes injured cells to divide and help repair the trauma has been named “traumatic acid”. Ah, chemistry and science, what a joy. It would certainly be traumatic if these cells could not repair themselves.

“Arabitel” has nothing to do with rabbits; it’s an organic alcohol that is a constituent of wine.

An alcohol derived from sugar is named “fucitel”, and comes from a North Atlantic seaweed. When sailing the ocean, perhaps one can troll a fishing line and pick up some “fucitel”

“Orotic Acid” is often misspelled and is called “Erotic Acid”. Another name for this acid is vitamin B13. A chemistry science fair project would be a good venue for a continued search into these unusually named molecules.

This one could sound like a laxative, but it is really a type of mica found in Japan and Sweden. It is called “Kinoshitalite” and is green and vitreous and hard as fingernails. It comes from the Japanese meaning under the tree.

“Vomicine” is a poisonous molecule that gets its name from a nut which is the seed of a tree found in the East Indies. These seeds are sometimes called quaker buttons and are a source of strychnine.

“Bastadin-5″ is just one of a number of bastadins which are molecules isolated from a marine sponge. They possess anti bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

“Skatole” comes from skatalogical, meaning concerning fecal material. Its proper name is 3-methylindole, but it gets its trivial name from the fact that it is a component of feces. It is also found in coal tar and beet. Chemistry science fair projects could emanate from this one.

“Sexithiophene” is a ’sexi’ molecule – which means it has 6 sub-units, in this case of thiophene rings. Because of its conjugated system of double bonds, this organic molecule conducts electricity quite well. As a result, it is one of a number of similar molecules being studied for possible uses in organic polymer electronics. Incidentally, the Latin for 5 sub-units is quinque (pronounced ‘kinky’), so by adding one sub-unit a quinque molecule becomes sexi.

“Bis(pinacolato) diboron” isn’t the active ingredient in a root beer float. Rather it is a versatile reagent for the preparation of boronic esters from halides, the diboration of olefins, and solid-phase Suzuki coupling. A proper root beer float consists of root beer and ice cream. If you’re lucky it will be served in a big glass.

“Lucifer Yellow” is a food coloring used especially in hot sauces, like salsa pickle. It is also used in plant microscopy anatomy studies, because it fluoresces under ultraviolet light and stains certain regions between plant cells.

“Crapinon” is used therapeutically as an anticholinergic. These are drugs which dry secretions, increase heart rate, and decrease lung constriction. The are also constipating, ergo “crappy-non” is appropriate.

Can We Plant the Land With Salt in Bible and Quran?

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Prof.dr. Ibrahim Khalil

The Salt is mentioned in the Bible 46 times and in the Quran three times, i.e., the Bible cites the Salt 15 times more than the Quran does.

Furthermore, the total words of the Bible are 788,280 while the total words of the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible has the likely of more than 10 times than the Quran word-wise to talk about the Salt. In addition, the Bible has the prospective of more than 15 times than the Quran topic-wise to utter about the Salt.

The Salt in the Bible:

The Woman Salt: Lot’s wife is a pillar of Salt.

Genesis 19:26

But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of Salt.

The Valley of Salt: 40 thousands were killed in it.

2 Samuel 8:13

And David became famous after he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

2 Kings 14:7

He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt

1 Chronicles 18:12

struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

2 Chronicles 25:11

and led his army to the Valley of Salt, where he killed ten thousand men

Psalm 60:1

struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

The City of Salt:

Joshua 15:62

Nibshan, the City of Salt and En Gedi.

The land Planted with Salt:

He sowed (planted) the city with Salt.

Judges 9:45

And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with Salt.

To be precise, I have read 20 versions of the Bible, 18 in English, one in Hebrew (Tanak) and one in Arabic. Eleven English versions say “sowed” the land with Salt. The Hebrew and the Arabic Versions say “planted” the land with Salt. Six English versions say “scattered” Salt over the land. One English version says “covered” it with Salt.

I wonder why the Bible says that and everyone in the world knows that the Salt is not a plant that needs to be sowed in the land.

The Mountain Salt (Tel Melah)

“Tel” means Mountain and “Melah” means Salt.

Ezra 2:59

The following came up from the towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon and Immer, but they could not show that their families were descended from Israel:

Ezra 2:58-60 (in Context) Ezra 2 (Whole Chapter)

Nehemiah 7:61

The following came up from the towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon and Immer, but they could not show that their families were descended from Israel.

The Salt home: The Salt flats as a habitat

Job 39:6

I gave him the wasteland as his home, the Salt flats as his habitat.

You are the Salt of the earth

Matthew 5:13

[Salt and Light] You are the Salt of the earth.

The Salted Conversation: Season your conversation with Salt then you know how to answer everyone

Colossians 4:6

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with Salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

However, in Leviticus 2:13 we have this advise also but for grain!

“Season all your grain offerings with Salt.”

The Healing Salt: How to heal the water then it will never again cause death or make the land unproductive?

2 Kings 2:20

“Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put Salt in it.” So they brought it to him.

2 Kings 2:21

Then he went out to the spring and threw the Salt into it, saying, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’ “

Salt the newborn: On the day of birth it is sin if you do not to rub the newborn with Salt

Ezekiel 16:4

On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with Salt or wrapped in cloths.

The Salt River: The River flows and makes the Salt water fresh.

As far as I know, all the Rivers’ water are fresh!

Ezekiel 47:9

Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the Salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.

The fire Salted everyone! I really do not know how.

Mark 9:49

Everyone will be Salted with fire.

The sacred Salt:

Exodus 30:35

And make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be Salted and pure and sacred.

Ezekiel 43:24

You are to offer them before the LORD, and the priests are to sprinkle Salt on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the LORD.

The covenant Salt: The Salt is the covenant of God

Leviticus 2:13

Do not leave the Salt of the covenant of your God

Numbers 18:19

It is an everlasting covenant of Salt before the LORD

2 Chronicles 13:5

Don’t you know that the LORD, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of Salt?

The Salt Sea: The Salt Sea is mentioned nine times in the Bible. However, all the seas and oceans are Salty.

Genesis 14:3

All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (the Salt Sea).

Numbers 34:3

.. your southern boundary will start from the end of the Salt Sea.

Numbers 34:12

Then the boundary will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea.

Deuteronomy 3:17

.. from Kinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea).

Joshua 3:16

…while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea). Joshua 12:3

…from the Sea of Kinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea ).

Joshua 15:2

…from the bay at the southern end of the Salt Sea.

Joshua 15:5

…The eastern boundary is the Salt Sea

Joshua 18:19

…at the northern bay of the Salt Sea.

Prophecy that never happened:

Nothing will be planted in Moab’s Land.

It is well known that Moab never stop planting and vegetation growing on it. On the other hand the Bible insists that it will be wasteland “forever”.

Deuteronomy 29:23

The whole land will be a burning waste of Salt and sulfur—nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger.

Jeremiah 48:9

Put Salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste ; her towns will become desolate, with no one to live in them.

Zephaniah 2:9

Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, “surely Moab will become like Sodom, the Ammonites like Gomorrah— a place of weeds and Salt pits, a wasteland forever. The remnant of my people will plunder them; the survivors of my nation will inherit their land.”

Some Scientific questions that I will let you answer them:

Job 6:6

Is tasteless food eaten without Salt, or is there flavor in the white of an egg ?

James 3:11

Can both fresh water and Salt water flow from the same spring?

James 3:12

My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a Salt spring produce fresh water.

However, we have one important question because the bible keeps repeating it for three times.

Matthew 5:13

But if the Salt loses its Saltiness, how can it be made Salty again?

Mark 9:50

“Salt is good, but if it loses its Saltiness, how can you make it Salty again?

Luke 14:34

“Salt is good, but if it loses its Saltiness, how can it be made Salty again?

The answer is yes we can make it Salty again, very easily by adding the appropriate quantity of sodium chloride!

The Salt in the Quran:

The Oceanologists and the Barrier between sweet and Salt Waters:

Surah 25:53

It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: one palatable and sweet and the other Salt and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, a partition that is forbidden to be passed.

Surah 35:12

Nor are the two bodies of flowing water alike, the one palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink, and the other, Salt and bitter. Yet from each (kind of water) do ye eat flesh fresh and tender, and ye extract ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the Bounty of Allah that ye may be grateful.

Modern Science has revealed that in the places where two different seas get together, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity, and density. For example, Mediterranean Sea water is warm, saline, and less dense, compared to Atlantic Ocean water. When Mediterranean Sea water enters the Atlantic over the Gibraltar sill, it moves some hundred kilometers into the Atlantic at a deepness of about 1000 meters with its own warm, saline, and less dense characteristics. The Mediterranean water stabilizes at this depth. Although there are large waves, strong currents, and tides in these seas, they do not mix or transgress this barrier.

The Quran mentioned that there is a barrier between two seas that meet and that they do not transgress.

On the other hand, when the Quran speaks about the divider between fresh and Salt water, it mentions the existence of a forbidding partition with the barrier. Modern science has discovered that where fresh (sweet) and Salt water meet, like the case of Nile and Mediterranean Sea, there is a pycnocline zone with a marked density discontinuity separating the two layers. This partition (zone of separation) has a different salinity from the fresh water and from the Salt water.

This information has been discovered only recently, using advanced equipment to measure temperature, salinity, density, oxygen dissolubility, etc. We can not, however, see by eye the difference between the two seas that meet; rather the two seas appear to us as one homogeneous sea. Likewise, the human eye cannot see the division of water in estuaries into the three kinds: fresh water, Salt water, and the partition between both which is called zone of separation.

In the following verse, the water that we drink is a gift from Allah. It is Allah Who sends it from the clouds. Allah can make this water Salty if He and when He Wants. Thank to Allah Who did not.

Surah 56:68-70

[68] Have you considered the water which you drink?

[69] Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are we the senders?

[70] It is Our Will, if we pleased, we would have made it Salty; why do you not then give thanks?

Plant Spirit Shamanism: What’s Up With the Weather?

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Ross Heaven

Plant spirit shamans – natural healers who work with herbs, ritual, and the elements – have long known that the world is not made up of discrete and separate parts, but that we are all one: that the ‘butterfly effect’ of a single extra drop of water released from a cloud into a Gloucestershire river could eventually lead to flooding in the distant streets of London.

Through Gaia Theory and a more informed understanding in recent years of how the natural world, the environment, and the climate really works, some scientists are also coming round to the shaman’s age-old view of the connections between all things.

How might these scientists and the shamans counter some of the current scepticism about ‘carbon footprints’ and climate change, and what might they say about the ‘freak weather conditions’ many of us have been experiencing lately? What are the objections of the sceptics, what are the facts, and what are scientists and modern-day shamans saying?

DOES CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) CAUSE GLOBAL WARMING?

The sceptics say there is no “proof” of this. But proof is not the job of science, which deals, in fact, with the art of probabilities. Scientists, that is, make hypotheses (‘best guesses’) which are there not to be proved, but to be disproved – if possible.

The current best guess – that CO2 does create a Greenhouse Effect by trapping solar radiation in the atmosphere and causing temperatures rises on Earth – has been around since 1829, when Joseph Fourier first put forward this hypothesis – and no-one’s proved him wrong yet.

Indeed, a recent survey of almost 1,000 peer-reviewed scientific articles could not find one which disagreed that climate change is a man-made phenomenon and that our output of CO2 plays a large part in this.

Even those with a vested interest in proving the scientists wrong – like oil companies Exxon-Mobil, Shell, and BP – have all issued statements recently agreeing with the evidence: that climate change is taking place, that is happening as a result of our activities, and that CO2 is a factor.

One place you can work out your own carbon footprint is http://www.direct.gov.uk/ActOnCO2 (www dot direct dot gov dot uk/ActOnCO2). You might be surprised at just how much you contribute.

If you’d then like the chance to something positive and practical to reduce it, another site to check is http://www.thefourgates.com/villagefundraisers.html#earth (www dot thefourgates dot com – then follow the link from The Village page to the fundraisers page and click on the Earth C.O.S.T. link: Carbon Offset to Save Trees).

WHAT ABOUT SOLAR RADIATION? DOESN’T THAT CAUSE CLIMATE CHANGE?

The current counter-theory to CO2 as the cause of global warming and climate change is one which seeks to lay the blame on solar radiation. It seems at best, however, to be a no-theory. It has been known for many years, that is – and commonsense should tell us in any case! – that solar radiation plays a part in keeping the planet warm, because when the Sun shines we all get a tan!

The science, however, shows that the Sun plays a much smaller role than greenhouse gasses in the situation now facing us.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER ‘NATURAL CAUSES’ – LIKE ANIMALS AND WATER VAPOUR?

Water vapour is a known part of the Greenhouse Effect – but it reacts to changes in climate rather than causing climate change. Evaporation and precipitation is a cycle and any water in the atmosphere doesn’t stay there for more than a few weeks.

Nature itself, in its widest to its narrowest forms, is also cyclical: the cycle of life and death. Animals and plants live, die, and become food for others, and the CO2 they create gets used up elsewhere as a result of this natural cycle.

Humans meanwhile, pump six gigatonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year and take little if any out. Nor do we put any fresh air back. We could do through activities like tree planting, since every tree naturally offsets 650 kg of CO2, transforming pollution, offsetting carbon, and giving us back fresh air. The problem is that few people are planting trees and, in fact, deforestation – the reverse of what we should be doing – is a major issue.

In 1600, for example, over 12% of Ireland was covered by broadleaf forests. By 1800, the figure was down to 2%. Since then, the country has been working to restore its forests but, by 2000, only 7% of woodlands had been returned. And, in the urgency to put trees back, the bulk of planting has been non-native trees. Many of these – like the iroko, from West Africa – are being logged in such an unsustainable way that if the present rate of depletion continues the forests there will be gone in five years. The outcome is stalemate (at best).

It is for these reasons that The Village has introduced the Earth C.O.S.T. Programme to plant a new forest of indigenous trees at its Centre for environmental and personal healing.

As it is, the Earth absorbs about half of our current CO2 but the rest hangs around as a greenhouse gas. Cutting back on energy usage and planting more trees would help. We know this because levels of CO2 have been stable for thousands of years until the Industrial Revolution began 150 years ago and deforestation also became rife.

ISN’T CLIMATE CHANGE JUST PART OF A NATURAL CYCLE?

It is true that every 100,000 years or so the Earth is subject to climate changes due to its orbit around the Sun. This is known as Milankovitch Cycle and its effects as well as its timeline are all fairly predictable.

In the 1970s, for example, scientists were already warning of a coming Ice Age as a result of this Cycle, so nothing’s changed there – except the timing. We should be able to predict about 50,000 years of natural warming as a result of the Milankovitch Cycle, that is; the problem, however, is that current warming is off the scale by a factor of – well, a lot! – if only the Milankovitch Cycle was the cause.

Climate change and global warming is speeding the process up.

WE CAN’T PREDICT THE WEATHER EVEN A FEW DAYS AHEAD SO HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT THE CLIMATE OF THE FUTURE HOLDS?

Firstly, weather isn’t climate. Weather refers to individual instances of sun or rain in specific geographical areas; climate is the average of all these instances over a bigger area and a longer period of time. Weather changes rapidly (which is why it can be so hard to predict) but climate is relatively stable.

An analogy, if you’re a gambling man, is the form of a particular horse. Of course you can’t predict (i.e. know) if he’ll win the race you’ve just bet the house on, but if you look back over his form, his performance on certain fields, and his fitness levels now, then average out his wins against losses, you can get an idea of his potential in this coming race – enough to make an informed decision, at least, on where to place your bet.

Which brings us back to our first point, since this is also how science works: through educated best guesses. And the current best guess, after studying past form and looking at the health of the planet now, is that man-made CO2 is leading to raised temperatures and to climate change.

WHAT DO THE SHAMANS SAY?

The Sioux medicine man Black Elk spoke early last century of the “sacred hoop of life”, that all things are “one” and that everything is part of a “great circle of existence”. Visionaries like Black Elk, and plant spirit shamans today, know that life on our planet amounts to far more than the discrete boxes, capable of control and intervention, that we have taken it to be until now.

James Lovelock – a visionary scientist rather than a shaman – has also shown, in our century, through his Gaia Hypothesis, that the world is alive, aware, and intelligent; a self-regulating organism that seeks balance, like our own bodies.

The job of human beings, says Lovelock, is “through our intelligence and communication [to act as] the nervous system of the planet. Through us, Gaia has seen herself from space and begins to know her place in the universe. We should be the heart and mind of the Earth, not its malady”.

A humble plea that we might start taking our rightful place by simply planting a few more trees.

Biotechnology; the Immense Interdisciplinary Science of Present Century

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Ravi Dhande

BIOTECHNOLOGY is one of the most important applied interdisciplinary sciences of the 21st century. It is the trusted area that enables us to find the beneficial way of life. It was given BT (Biotechnology) for Bharat tomorrow, but the tomorrow has come and is now called as Bharat Today. This science has an invaluable outcome like transgenic varieties of plants e.g. transgenic cotton (BT-cotton), rice, tomato, tobacco, cauliflower, potato & banana. The animals like cow, buffalo, sheep (Dolly) etc are the transgenic outputs. It is the science by which, “One can play with gene and dances with the protein.” Biotechnology has wide applications in various sectors like agriculture, medicine, environment and commercial industries. The development of transgenics as pesticide resistant, stress resistant and disease resistant varieties of agricultural crops is the immense outcome of biotechnology, whereas the synthesis of human insulin & blood protein in E.coli is the quantum jump of biotechnology. The synthesis of vaccines, enzymes, antibiotics, dairy products and beverages are the products of biotech industries. Biochip based biological computer is the success of biotechnology.

Genetic engineering and Tissue culture are the important areas of biotechnology. Genetic engineering involves genetic manipulation and tissue culture involves aseptic cultivation of totipotent plant cell into plant clones under controlled atmospheric conditions. The totipotent animal stem cell is being used for skin culture at AIIMS, New Delhi.

PROFESSIONL COURSES IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

Postgraduate courses available in India are: M.Sc. Bible Versus Quran Versus Sciences, (31) the Salt

The Salt in Quran:

Creating a Middle School Science Fair Project in Time

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Werent those science experiments fun when you were in school? You had to run around like crazy to get it done because you had waited so long. Did your parents remind you that they had to do all the running around for you? Your kids will have to do the science fair projects too and now you can be the ones running around like crazy.

If you need some ideas here are some that require more display than work: Consider gathering some shells and seeing what animals live in them, these can be glued to your poster board or you can draw them. Obtain pictures of different types of clouds and then describe the different types. Instead of just labeling pictures of clouds consider making your own from cotton and glue them on the poster. Do some fruits ripen quicker than others? Find out with this experiment. Most any fruit will do for this experiment; leave one out at room temperature, another in a really warm area and one in the fridge. Be sure to check all three places daily and keep a record of how they change. Do you think the shape of ice will affect how it melts? Before you put the containers in the freezer put equal amounts of water in them and freeze. After taking the containers out of the freezer and letting them melt write down how long it took each one. Consider making a tornado for your science fair. Pour some water in a jar about way up; Take the jar and add some food coloring along with a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent. Shake up the jar really good after putting the lid on it. The liquid inside the jar forms a vortex and acts just like a real tornado. Monopoly houses placed in the jar before shaking it adds a little fun to the project.

One project that won 2nd place is actually a failed experiment. If using plain water on one plant and sugar water on the other plant which would grow better? It was predicted that the sugar water would make the plant grow better. Using sugar water with one and plain water with the other take identical pots with several sunflowers planted in them. If they sprout take some pictures or be sure to keep very detailed notes. Both plants did sprout and the one that used regular water grew very well, yet the one with sugar waters seemed to rot more each day. She was a little nervous having to present it to the judges because her hypothesis had been incorrect, she compared the failed experiment do having your teeth rot with too much sugar or sweets. The judges told her that science is all about finding what does or does not work so her experiment was not really a failure and she won 2nd place. Even though she was kind of upset that her experiment failed she put on a great show and the judges liked that.
