Philosophy as a science

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Philosophy is considered a science but it is difficult to say, when one has to compare with an ordinary science, for example biology, or chemistry. This is a question that turns into a burning problem among the scientists and linguists all over the world. Can philosophy be a science? What does philosophy operate with? It operates with categories, which can be as wide and as interchangeable as one can only imagine. Ordinary science operates with definitions, which are quite limited in their field of research. Ordinary science uses terms and laws of that very science to continue the research, uniting with the others in very rare cases. Philosophy gets into the sense of every science trying to achieve results.

We also can not call philosophy a supra-science, for it also uses hypothesis and arguments to state the opinion. But there is the obvious thing: there are now laws in philosophy and never will be, for the science changes with the age, the needs, beliefs and requirements of the citizens. To prove your opinion, you can write the definition essay and state all the facts and arguments you know to prove one way or another. This is also a nice way to research the problem and see what the solution is. But you have to research it carefully; otherwise definition essays will not be fruitful. As all sciences philosophy has gone through its stages of development. Some scientists believe that the crib of philosophy was mythology and religion. If to see the principles of life and some primitive morals stated in some myths we may see that the statement is quite true and philosophy still continues to develop out of social beliefs and ideas. Philosophy is a science which is obligatory learned by every college student in order for him to establish his own philosophy of life. It is quite exciting to find answers to ever existing questions: who am I? What do I know? What can I know? What am I destined to do? Here is one more interesting observation. You can see that all famous philosophers were researching other science fields also. For example, Freud, Yung, Kafka and others were doing research in linguistics and social sciences. Their numerous creations are the pride of human history for they revealed some secrets that remained undiscovered for a long time before their great contributions.

There are so many currents and branches, so many schools of philosophy that it is hard to decide, which one do you prefer and agree with. This much depends on the country, family, society you live in. This is one more difference between philosophy and other natural sciences. The law is stable for any country; gravity exists in India, same as in Brazil. Philosophy is a hard science, for it is very difficult to understand the sense of the dogma reading it only once. It is of course, not easy, but gives credit for you if you get interested and somewhere, being at the social event you quote one of the famous doctors of philosophy and make a great impression of an educated and intelligent personality.

What Is Forensic Science? The Basics Of A Rewarding Career

Friday, September 12th, 2008

For diverse reasons, Forensic Science is becoming a very popular subject, although few people seem to have a concrete idea about this branch of Science. Probably the main reason for the popularity of forensics is the success some TV shows have enjoyed during the past few years. CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) is by far the best example, where teams composed by fashionable young investigators skillfully manage to solve the most complicated criminal cases whose preliminary evidence often lead to unpredictable outcomes.

However, the reality of the forensics world is often far from what is depicted on TV serials. Actual forensic investigations involve several groups of people, each specialized in a different area of expertise, rather than being a small group where the members perform very different tests and methods.

Leaving Hollywood aside, let’s take a brief look at the main areas that compete to forensic experts.

Forensic Anthropology: These experts search, recover and analyze human remains with the aim of establishing the identity of unknown individuals. They can deal with remains such as skeletons or decomposed, mummified, burned, or otherwise unrecognizable bodies to inquire parameters such as age at death, sex, stature (height), ancestry or pathology. Other estimations such as time since death and manner of death are also carried out. They are involved in criminal cases but also when deaths resulted from accident, suicide, or even mass disasters or human rights violations (i.e., genocide).

Forensic Pathology: These are also known as Medical Examiners. They usually carry out autopsies of dead bodies to establish cause of death and identity, or confirm it if not known yet. Autopsies are performed when death was sudden or unexpected, as it is the case of accidents, homicides, suicides or other tragedies.

Forensic Odontology or Forensic Dentistry: Specialize on using dental evidence to establish identity. Dentition remains are often helpful in cases of mass disasters or where multiple deaths occurred. Dental forensics also analyze bite marks looking for dental features that could lead to a match between a wound and a suspect’s dental features like tooth alignment and shape.

Forensic Nurses get involved in recognition of cases of abuse, either child physical or sexual abuse, or cases where adult domestic violence, raping are suspected. They usually work in hospital emergency room situations

Forensic Chemistry and its related field Forensic Toxicology deal with the analysis of chemicals such as drugs and poisons that may occur in body fluids or at crime scenes. Such studies can contribute to know the cause of death in murder, identify chemicals used in explosives or used to start or accelerate a fire. Other elements of interest for this field include fingerprints, soil, dust, fibers, glass and hairs.

DNA Analysis and Molecular Biology are becoming popular subjects in forensic science. The main purpose of this field is the analysis of DNA for purposes of human identification

Forensics is a big and growing field of the law related professional sphere and involves other aspects that I will address in other articles. Keep in mind that whichever branch one chooses to embrace, becoming a forensic scientist requires full commitment with ethics and a lifelong dedication. Just remember that working in forensics is not just a fashionable position but a job bearing some responsibility on imparting Justice and the freedom of the innocent and the ability of the Law to punish the guilty are at stake.

The Three "questions" of Science Fiction

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

There is a great deal of misunderstanding about what that particular branch of literature called “Science Fiction” actually consists of. Is it space-ships and monsters? Time machines? Galactic empires? Well, it’s all of those things, and often none of them.

Science Fiction, broadly speaking, is story-telling that deals with the impact of organized knowledge on human beings. Usually, this means technology, and the way it changes us—and reveals about us. After all, most technology is an extension of our senses, attributes and desires: computers are brains, cell-phones are voices and ears, cars are legs, planes are the dream of flight.

Many classic S.F. films and books take place in worlds identical to ours, except for the creation of some new device, or the appearance of a new life-form. Others take place in worlds so apparently foreign that only the most dedicated and experienced reader can understand what is going on!

But at the core, there are three questions or musings most often asked or explored in any work with the “Science Fiction” label. Those three are:

1) What if?

2) If Only…

3) If This Goes On…

Although these three “questions” overlap considerably, the first, “What If?”, is the most essential of the three. “What If the Martians attacked?” “What If eternal life was available at a price?” “What If we knew an asteroid would hit Earth in a year?”

The second adds a bit of longing to the equation. “If Only President Kennedy hadn’t been assassinated…” is the kind of question that leads to sociological and historical speculation, or the “Alternate History” branch of S.F. which has become tremendously popular in the last decade. “If Only the gene for generosity (or anger, or bigotry) could be mapped…” “If Only we could selectively prune bad memories…”

There is an emotional quality to the “If Only” questions, and they often speak to a sense of missed opportunity, roads not taken.

The third question, “If This Goes On” is tailor-made for cautionary tales. “If we continue to pollute the environment…” “If one party continues to dominate American politics…” “If more women enter the management class…” “If the space program continues to Privatize” “If human beings become better at modifying their physical characteristics…”

These questions are starting places for speculation. While it is easy to use any of them for trivial or absurd (and entertaining!) questions like “What if a 300-foot radioactive lizard attacked Tokyo?” they can also address profound issues, as in “how would humanity change if we gained incontrovertible proof of intelligent alien life?”

By concentrating on the question, or proposition, at the core of your story, it becomes easier to keep it from becoming a CGI-fest. Ask yourself how YOU would react to a given situation. How your family would react—you know them well. Then friends. Political adversaries. Other nations, and people of other groups. Dig into the meat of it. Study history, and begin to grasp the way societies change in response to technology, for instance the Automobile, or Printing Press, or Computer.

The more deeply you delve, the more likely you will be to create a unique question with unique answers. Then people your world with breathing, believable characters responding as intelligent, feeling people have since the beginning of time. Your work will blossom and reach new levels…

Darwinism is not Science it is a Shamanistic Religion That Has Adopted Nature as a Deity!

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Harun Yahya

Darwinism is an ancient shamanistic religion built on superstitions of all kinds. The origins of shamanism go back some 50,000 years.

• Shamanism is a belief system based on the worship of forces such as rain, snow, lightning, storms, wind, and the Sun. Darwinism is also a religion of nature-worship; it describes nature as an entity with “mythical and mysterious powers.” It anticipates the belief that stone, earth, the Sun, lightning and wind combined to give rise to life.

• Shamans claim to be the physicians, sages, leaders and administrators of their tribes and societies. Darwinists describe themselves in the same way. Shamans maintain that they understand the secrets of nature and can foretell the future. Similarly, Darwinists maintain that they know the secrets of matter, the atom and the Earth, and seek to describe imaginary changes that human beings and nature will be subject to in the future.

• Astronomy, biology, paleontology, physics, geology, chemistry, geophysics, embryology are all sciences. Darwinism, however, is not a science, but a primitive shamanistic religion.

Darwinists’ present-day beliefs are just as odd and irrational as those of people who once worshipped crocodiles. Darwinists regard chance and inanimate, unconscious atoms as a creative force, and are as devoted to that belief as if to a religion.

- Since the theory of evolution was first put forward, advances in a great many branches of science, have demolished the theory’s claims, one by one. Nonetheless, Darwinism still has its adherents. Typically, when a scientific theory is disproved, it is shelved, and all debate and discussion comes to an end. But not so with Darwinism. No matter how powerful and indisputable the evidence against their theory may be, evolutionists ignore it and continue to defend their beliefs in a fervent manner.

- Worshipping fire, the stars or the Sun, believing that the Pyramids were built by aliens, or venerating certain animals as sacred is not scientific. In the same way, neither is Darwinism–because just like other superstitious beliefs, Darwinism is also a religion of idols and false deities.

Members of the shamanistic religion of Darwinism spread fictitious reports about the future and try to bring new converts under their spell.

- Darwinism’s foremost idol is the “idol of chance.” Whatever Darwinist text you read, you will see claims about the power and limitless abilities of “natural selection,” the lifeblood and essence of Darwinism.

- Evolutionists claim that everything performed by the “idol of chance” is actually based on pragmatic calculations. In their view, this idol is able to consider everything and calculate in advance every step it will take.

- Evolutionists believe in one very strange force. They ascribe divine status to matter. They have belief that matter once assembled itself into a living cell and that one organism can give rise to another, entirely different one. Science has refuted these ideas. But for Darwinists, they are irrefutable facts that everyone must believe.

- Darwinism is an ancient shamanistic religion, built on insane and irrational superstitions and falsehoods. This idolatrous religion has been invented to confront Islam.

- According to the shamanistic religion of Darwinism, earth, water, rock and stone can feel, smell, hear and perceive colors.

Pagan societies have existed on Earth since the very earliest times. People at all times and all societies have fashioned different idols for themselves. In the same way that Darwinists adopt chance and inanimate matter as creative entities, similar imaginings were once adopted as idols by societies with warped beliefs. Above: Images depicting the Sumerian water idols.

- The essence of the religion of Darwinists is their nonsensical belief in chance that violates both science and reason. In fact, any rational mind is quite able to conceive that no complex entity can come into being spontaneously, by chance, but absolutely must be the product of a conscious plan. However, just like pagans who worship the idols they have crafted with their own hands, Darwinists believe in false deities.

- The nonsensical belief that Darwinists have adopted bears a very close resemblance to the beliefs of ancient pagan cultures. In the much same way that pagans believe that inanimate idols created all things, so evolutionists and materialists believe that inanimate matter created all living things. (God is surely beyond these.) They claim that even their own human bodies are the sum total of various coincidences.

- It is unacceptable for students to be taught Darwinist shamanistic religion under the name of science. What they need are courses in biology that have been purged of this shamanistic religion.

- The Turkish public laughs at the ruses resorted to by local evolutionists, because they cannot prove evolution by way of slander and aggression. Any evidence they have, they should put forward, whereupon everyone can easily distinguish between truth and error. For months now, the exhibitions of fossils taking place all over the country have helped the Turkish public realize that living things never underwent evolution.

- It is expected that evolutionists exhibit fossils if they have any. At the very least, they should display a few of them in the central headquarters or gardens of Turkish daily newspapers such as Cumhuriyet, Vatan and Hurriyet, or in such heavily frequented public spaces such as Istanbul’s Taksim Square or Ulus in Ankara. If they cannot do that, then they should cease their defense of evolution. They have no intermediate-form fossils to show, because such things never existed.

- Each fossil that evolutionists have put forward as a proof of evolution has turned out to be a fake or else misinterpreted. “Piltdown Man,” for example, turned out to be a hoax. The tooth of Nebraska “Man” turned out to be from a fossil boar. The coelacanth has been caught alive—and unchanged—since 1938. All the skull and bone fragments that allegedly show the human evolution tale have been proven to be either those of present-day human beings or else of species of ape that have become extinct.

Evolutionists conjure up creatures that never actually existed and hire skilled artists to produce “reconstructed” models and illustrations—which they use to try and convince people that evolution is a scientific fact. This false evidence is displayed in newspapers, magazines and museums. But these depictions reflect nothing beyond their makers’ imaginations. No such entities exist in the fossil record. Yet evolutionists themselves finally fall under the spell of this false evidence they have created with their own hands and start to believe in the religion of Darwinism.

SCIENTIFIC FACTS REFUTE THE CLAIMS OF THE

“SHAMANISTIC RELIGION OF DARWINISM”

According to the Shamanistic Religion of Darwinism: the first living organism formed spontaneously.

According to modern science, life cannot come into being by chance. Not one single protein or even a single cell, let alone a whole organism, can emerge by chance. The likelihood of any protein emerging by chance is only 1 in 10950. In practical terms, this equates to zero probability.

According to the Shamanistic Religion of Darwinism: living species descended from earlier, more primitive ones.

According to modern science, species cannot descend from one another. Every life form has its own unique characteristics. It is impossible for them to develop through another species’ gradual changes.

According to the Shamanistic Religion of Darwinism: fossils confirm the theory of evolution.

According to modern science, fossils are evidence of creation, not evolution. Some 100 million fossils have so far been discovered, and all of them represent complete, fully formed organisms. Not a single fossil indicates that it was undergoing any transitional “evolution.”

According to the Shamanistic Religion of Darwinism: species diversified through mutations.

According to modern science, mutations damage organisms, and do not improve them. They cannot cause a species to diversify: they either kill or cripple the mutated individual.

According to the Shamanistic Religion of Darwinism: humans are descended from ape-like creatures.

According to modern science, apes and humans are totally separate species. There is no family relationship between them. Despite their physical similarities, they have enormous differences that cannot be explained by claims of evolution.

According to the Shamanistic Religion of Darwinism: natural selection present in nature is proof of evolution.

According to modern science, natural selection cannot cause one living thing to evolve or give rise to new life forms.

TWO NEW DECEPTIONS FROM EVOLUTIONISTS:

TIKTAALIK ROSEAE AND GOGONASUS

The fossil discovered in Canada a few months ago and given the name of Tiktaalik roseae was portrayed as major evidence for evolution. In fact, however, this creature is obviously a “mosaic” combining a great many features. Nonetheless, evolutionists depict this creature as an intermediate species and claim, using fictitious illustrations, that it represents proof of a transition from water to land. The platypus found in modern-day Australia is also a mosaic creature that shares mammalian, reptilian and bird characteristics at one and the same time. Yet nothing about it can be depicted as proof of evolution.

In recent days, evolutionists have brought up yet another fossil found in Australia, repeating their tales that have persisted for so many years of a “completed missing link.” This new fossil, known as Gogonasus and evidently an extinct species of fish, has nothing whatsoever to do with evolution. Evolutionists seek to use it as an evidence for their myth of the transition from water to dry land, particularly on account of its fin bones, but the fossil in question is an obvious species of fish totally unconnected with life on land. The coelacanth, still alive today, also has bones in its fins, but these have been established to be perfectly ordinary structures that the fish uses solely for the purpose of swimming.

In order to substantiate their claims, evolutionists must discover “intermediate forms,” with deficient, half-formed organs that are not fully functional. Yet every one of the organs possessed by these fossil creatures is complete, flawless. There are no semi-developed organs, nor any fossil series that can be presented as evidence for an evolutionary transition from other living species.

Evolutionists must finally accept the facts and stop trying to deceive the public with their fabrications.

MATERIALIST SELF-INTEREST CABALS ARE UP TO NEW CONSPIRACIES

In recent months, both the Turkish and the world media have been issuing panicked reports about the global defeat of Darwinism. The routing of Darwinism has had a deep impact on European Freemasonry and certain other secret forces, and these have resorted to a plan produced out of terror of the threat of the elimination of atheism and materialism. British and French lodges have issued directives. Sabbatean families are also becoming involved, out of a thirst for vengeance. In order that the matter should be definitively resolved, various writers are being hired out, and a plot is being prepared against all patriotic individuals. The principal target is the Science Research Foundation.

In the future, however, just as in the past, it will be impossible for these endeavors to bear any fruit. Millions are aware of just what is going on. A new Sun has risen, and its light has illuminated all parts. The next thing for evolutionists to do is submit in the face of the facts.

ISLAM CONFLICTS WITH PAGAN RELIGIONS, NOT WITH SCIENCE

Islam commands people to research and investigate all branches of science and knowledge:

. . . Reflect on the creation of the heavens and the Earth . . . (Surah Al Imran, 191)

Have they not looked at the sky above them: how We structured it . . . (Surah Qaf, 6)

. . . You will not find any flaw in the creation of the All-Merciful. Look again . . . (Surat al-Mulk, 3)

Man has only to look at what he was created from. (Surat at-Tariq, 5)

Have they not looked at the camel—how it was created, and at the sky—how it was raised up, and at the mountains—how they were embedded, and at the Earth—how it was smoothed out? (Surat al-Ghashiyya, 17-20)

In the heavens and Earth there are certainly signs for the believers. And in your creation and all the creatures He has spread about there are signs for people with certainty. (Surat al-Jathiyya, 3-4)

It is therefore impossible to claim any divergence between science and Islam.

However, Islam does oppose all false religions. It is opposed to the worship of fire, of the devil, animals or idols—in short, to all forms of pagan belief. Shamanism is a religion that also worships chance and nature (animals, plants, stones, earth and matter). As a shamanistic creed, Darwinism is therefore in conflict with Islam.

The Islamic Origins of Modern Science

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Harun Yahya

Fourteen centuries ago, God sent down the Qur’an as a guide to all humanity.

At the time the Arab society was in a state of complete degeneration, chaos and ignorance. They were a barbarous people who worshipped idols of their own making, believed warfare and bloodshed to be virtuous and were even capable of killing their own children. They had little interest in intellectual matters, let alone a scientific outlook to the natural world.

However, through Islam they learned humanity and civilization. Not only the Arabs but all the communities which accepted Islam escaped the darkness of the age of ignorance and were illuminated by the divine wisdom of the Qur’an. Amongst the faculties the Qur’an brought to humanity was scientific thinking.

The Scientific Paradigm Given in the Qur’an

The genesis of scientific thought is the sense of curiosity. Because people wonder how the universe and nature work, they investigate and become interested in science. But most people lack this curiosity. For them, the important things are not the secrets of the universe and nature but their own small worldly profits and pleasures. In communities where people who think in this way are in charge, science does not develop. Idleness and ignorance rule.

The Arab community before the Qur’an was of this type. But the verses of the Qur’an called upon them to think, to investigate and to use their minds, perhaps for the first time in their lives.

In one of the first revealed verses of the Qur’an, God drew the attention of the Arabs to the camel, a part of their everyday lives:

Have they not looked at the camel-how it was created?

And at the sky-how it was raised up?

And at the mountains-how they were embedded?

And at the earth-how it is spread out?

So remind them! You are only a reminder. (Qur’an, 88: 17-21)

In many other verses of the Qur’an, people are instructed to examine nature and learn from it because people can know God only by examining His creations. Because of this, in one verse of the Qur’an Muslims are defined as people who think about the creation of the heavens and the earth:

Those who remember God, standing, sitting and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth (saying): “Our Lord, You have not created this for nothing. Glory be to You! So safeguard us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Qur’an, 3: 191)

An early manuscript of the Qur’an.

As a result of this, for a Muslim, taking an interest in science is a very important form of worship. In many verses of the Qur’an, God instructs Muslims to investigate the heavens, the earth, living things or their own existence and think about them. When we look at the verses, we find indications of all the main branches of science in the Qur’an.

For example, in the Qur’an, God encourages the science of astronomy:

He who created the seven heavens in layers. You will not find any flaw in the creation of the All-Merciful. Look again-do you see any gaps? (Qur’an, 67: 3)

In another verse of the Qur’an, God encourages the investigation of astronomy and the composition of the earth that is the science of geology:

Do they not look at the sky above them? How We have made it and adorned it, and there are no flaws in it? And the earth- We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm, and produced therein every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs)-To be observed and commemorated by every devotee turning (to God). (Qur’an, 50: 6-8)

In the Qur’an, God also encourages the study of botany:

It is He Who sends down water from the sky from which We bring forth growth of every kind, and from that We bring forth the green shoots and from them We bring forth close-packed seeds, and from the spathes of the date palm date clusters hanging down, and gardens of grapes and olives and pomegranates, both similar and dissimilar. Look at their fruits as they bear fruit and ripen. There are Signs in that for people who believe. (Qur’an, 6:99)

In another verse of the Qur’an, God draws attention to zoology:

You have a lesson in livestock… (Qur’an, 16:66)

Here is a Qur’anic verse about the sciences of archaeology and anthropology:

Have they not traveled in the earth and seen the final fate of those before them? (Qur’an, 30: 9)

In another verse of the Qur’an, God draws attention to the proof of God in a person’s own body and spirit:

There are certainly Signs in the earth for people with certainty; and in yourselves as well. Do you not then see? (Qur’an, 51: 20-21)

As we can see, God recommends all the sciences to Muslims in the Qur’an. Because of this the growth of Islam in history meant at the same time the growth of scientific knowledge.

The Scientific Renaissance of the Middle East

Muslim scholars in Baghdat, the world’s

scientific capital of the time.

As we have mentioned, when the Prophet Mohammed (pbh) began to preach Islam, the Arabs were a community of ignorant, superstitious tribes. However, thanks to the light of the Qur’an they were rescued from superstition and began to follow the path of reason. As a result of this, one of the most astonishing developments in world history took place and in a few decades Islam, which emerged from the small town of Medina, spread from Africa to Central Asia. The Arabs, who previously could not even rule a single city in harmony, came to be rulers of a world empire.

One of the most important facets of this empire was that it provided the stage for a scientific development previously unmatched in history. At a time when Europe was living through the Dark Ages, the Islamic world created the greatest legacy of scientific knowledge seen in history to that date. The sciences of medicine, geometry, algebra, astronomy and even sociology were developed systematically for the first time.

Great centers of religious learning were also centers of knowledge and scientific development. Such formal centers began during the Abbasid period (750-1258 A.D.) when thousands of mosque schools were established. In the tenth century Baghdad had some 300 schools. Alexandria in the fourteenth century had 12,000 students. It was in the tenth century that the formal concept of the Madrassah (school) was developed in Baghdad. The Madrassah had a curriculum and full-time and part-time teachers, many of whom were women. Rich and poor alike received free education. From there Maktabat (libraries) were developed and foreign books acquired. The two most famous are Bait al-Hikmah in Baghdad (ca. 820) and Dar al-Ilm in Cairo (ca. 998). Universities such as Al-Azhar (969 A.D.) were also established long before those in Europe. The Islamic world created the first universities – and even hospitals – in the world.

Islamic scientific manuscripts of the Medieval Age; meticulous studies on human anatomy and zoology.

This fact may be very surprising to modern Westerners, who generally have a different kind of picture about Islam in their minds. But this picture emerges from ignorance about the origins and history of the Islamic civilization. Those who get rid of this ignorance – and several prejudices – acknowledge the true nature of Islam. One example of these is a recent documentary film by PBS, titled Islam: The Empire of Faith, in which the commentator rightly states that:

In the unfolding of history, Islamic civilization has been one of humanity’s grandest achievements… For the West, much of the history of Islam has been obscured behind a veil of fear and misunderstanding. Yet Islam’s hidden history in deeply and surprisingly interwoven with Western civilization… It was they (Muslim scholars) who sewed the seeds of the Renaissance, 600 years before the birth of Leonardo da Vinci. From the way we heal the sick to the numerals we use for counting, cultures across the globe have been shaped by the Islamic civilization. 1

In an article published in Salon.com, a prominent voice of the liberal American media, author George Rafael writes in an article titled “A Is For Arabs” that;

From algebra and coffee to guitars, optics and universities… the West owes to the People of the Crescent Moon… A millennium ago, while the West was shrouded in darkness, Islam enjoyed a golden age. Lighting in the streets of Cordoba when London was a barbarous pit; religious tolerance in Toledo while pogroms raged from York to Vienna. As custodians of our classical legacy, Arabs were midwives to our Renaissance. Their influence, however alien it might seem, has always been with us, whether it’s a cup of steaming hot Joe or the algorithms in computer programs. 2

The Open-Mindedness of Islam

What allowed Muslims to create such an advanced scientific culture was derived from the faculties of the Islamic understanding. One of them was, as we have noted, the motive to learn about the universe and nature according to the Qur’anic principles. Another one was open-mindedness. Both the Qur’anic wisdom and the Prophetic teaching gave Muslims a global outlook to the world, overcoming all cultural barriers. In the Qur’an, God states:

Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come to know each other…” (Qur’an, 49:13)

This verse clearly encourages cultural relationships between different nations and communities. In another verse of the Qur’an is it stated that “Both East and West belong to Allah” (2:115), thus Muslims should see the world in a universalist and cosmopolitan vision.

The hadiths, or sayings, of the Prophet also encourage this vision. In a popular hadith, the Prophet tells Muslims that “wisdom is the lost property of the Muslims; he takes it from wherever he finds”. This means that Muslims should be very pragmatic and broadminded in adapting and using the cultural and scientific achievements of non-Muslims; those non-Muslims are also creatures and servants of God, even they might not recognize so. The “People of The Book”, i.e. Christians and Jews, are even much more compatible, since they believe in God and stick to moral code He revealed to man.

In the rise of Islamic science, the role of this open-mindedness is very clear to see. John Esposito of the Georgetown University, one of the most prominent Western experts on Islam, makes the following comment:

The genesis of Islamic civilization was indeed a collaborative effort, incorporating the learning and wisdom of many cultures and languages. As in government administration, Christians and Jews, who had been the intellectual and bureaucratic backbone of the Persian and Byzantine empires, participated in the process as well as Muslims. This “ecumenical” effort was evident at the Caliph al-Mamun’s (reigned 813-33) House of Wisdom and at the translation center headed by the renowned scholar Hunayn ibn Isaq, a Nestorian Christian. This period of translation and assimilation was followed by one of Muslim intellectual and artistic creativity. Muslims ceased to be disciples and became masters, in process producing Islamic civilization, dominated by the Arabic language and Islam’s view of life… Major contributions were made in many fields: literature and philosophy, algebra and geometry, science and medicine, art and architecture… Great urban cultural centers in Cordoba, Baghdad, Cairo, Nishapur, and Palermo emerged and eclipsed Christian Europe, mired in Dark Ages. 3

According to one of the great Muslim scholars of our time, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Islamic science was “the first science of a truly international nature in human history”. 4

Another Medieval Muslim manuscript describing the planetary motion.

Yet Muslims did not only incorporate other cultures, but developed their own. Some commentators neglect this and try to link the Islamic scientific development solely to the influence of the Ancient Greece or Far East. But the real source of Islamic science was the experimentation and observations of Muslim scientists. In his book The Middle East, Professor Bernard Lewis, an undoubted expert in Middle Eastern history, explains it as follows:

The achievement of medieval Islamic science is not limited to the preservation of Greek learning, nor to the incorporation in the corpus of elements from the more ancient and more distant East. This heritage which medieval Islamic scientists handed on to the modern world was immensely enriched by their own efforts and contributions. Greek science, on the whole rather tended to be theoretical. Medieval Middle Eastern science was much more practical, and in such fields as medicine, chemistry, astronomy and agronomy, the classical heritage was clarified and supplemented by the experiments and observations of the medieval Middle East. 5

As noted by Westerners, this advanced scientific culture of the Islamic world paved the way for the Western Renaissance. Muslim scientists acted in the knowledge that their investigation of God’s creation was a path through which they could get to know Him. Esposito stresses that “Muslim scientists, who were often philosophers of mystics as well, viewed physical universe from within their Islamic worldview and context as a manifestation of the presence of God, the Creator and the source and unity and harmony in nature.” 6 With the transfer of this paradigm and its accumulation of knowledge to the Western world, the advance of the West began.

The Theist Origins of Western Science

Medieval Europe was ruled by the dogmatic regime of the Catholic Church. The Church opposed freedom of thought and pressured scientists. People could be punished by the Inquisition simply for holding different beliefs or ideas. Their books were burned and they themselves were executed. The pressure on research in the Middle Ages is often referred to in history books, but some interpret the situation wrongly and claim that the scientists who clashed with the Church were against religion.

The truth is the exact opposite-the scientists who opposed the bigotry of the church were religious believers. They were not against religion, but against the harsh clericalism of the time.

For example, the famous astronomer Galileo, whom the Church wanted to punish because he stated that the world rotated, said, “I render infinite thanks to God for being so kind as to make me alone the first observer of marvels kept hidden in obscurity for all previous centuries.” 7

The other scientists who established modern science were all religious.

Kepler, regarded as the founder of modern astronomy, told those who asked him why he busied himself with science, “I had the intention of becoming a theologian… but now I see how God is, by my endeavors, also glorified in astronomy, for ‘heavens declare the glory of God’”. 8

As for Newton, one of the greatest scientists in history, he explained the reason underlying his zeal for scientific endeavor by saying:

“…He (God) is eternal and infinite, omnipotent and omniscient; that is, his duration reaches from eternity to eternity; his presence from infinity to infinity; he governs all things, and knows all things that are or can be done. …We know him only by his most wise and excellent contrivances of things… [W]e revere and adore him as his servants…” 9

The great genius Pascal, the father of modern mathematics, said that: “But by faith we know His (God’s) existence; in glory we shall know His nature.” 10

Many other founders of modern Western science were also strong believers. For example:

” Von Helmont, one of the leading figures in modern chemistry and the inventor of the thermometer, declared that science was a part of faith.

” George Cuvier, the founder of modern paleontology, regarded fossils as surviving proofs of the Creation and taught that living species had been created by God.

” Carl Linnaeus, who first systematized scientific classification, believed in the Creation and stated that the natural order was a significant proof of God’s existence.

” Gregor Mendel, the founder of genetics, and also a monk, believed in Creation and opposed the evolutionary theories of his time, such as Darwinism and Lamarckism.

” Louis Pasteur, the greatest name in the history of microbiology, proved that life could not be created in inert matter and taught that life was a miracle of God.

” The famous German physicist Max Planck said that the Creator of the universe was God and stressed that faith was a necessary quality of scientists.

” Albert Einstein, regarded as the most important scientist of the twentieth century, believed that science could not be godless and said, “science without religion is lame.”

A large number of other scientists who guided modern scientific progress were religious people who believed in God. These scientists served science with the intention of discovering the universe that God had created – a paradigm that was first developed and implemented in the Islamic world and then incorporated into the West. All these theist scientists thought about the creation of the heavens and the earth and investigated in the awareness of God – as God decreed in the Qur’an and the Bible. The birth of science and its development were the result of this awareness.

During the nineteenth century, however, this awareness was replaced by a misconception called materialism.

The Rise and Fall of the Materialist Deviation

The nineteenth century was a period that witnessed the greatest errors in human history. These errors began with the imposition on European thought of materialist philosophy, an ancient Greek teaching.

The greatest error of this period was Darwin’s theory of evolution. Before the birth of Darwinism, biology was accepted as a branch of science that provided evidence of the existence of God. In his book Natural Theology, the famous author William Paley maintained that, to the extent that every clock proves the existence of a clockmaker, natural designs prove the existence of God.

However, Darwin rejected this truth in his theory of evolution. By distorting the truth to fit materialist philosophy, he claimed that all living things were the result of blind natural causes. In this way he created an artificial antagonism between religion and science.

In their book The Messianic Legacy, English authors Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln have this to say on the subject:

For Isaac Newton, a century and a half before Darwin, science was not separate from religion but, on the contrary, an aspect of religion, and ultimately subservient to it. …But the science of Darwin’s time became precisely that, divorcing itself from the context in which it had previously existed and establishing itself as a rival absolute, an alternative repository of meaning. As a result, religion and science were no longer working in concert, but rather stood opposed to each other, and humanity was increasingly forced to choose between them. 11

Not only biology, but also branches of sciences such as psychology and sociology were twisted according to materialist philosophy. Astronomy was distorted according to the materialist dogmas of ancient pagan Greece; a metaphysical faith in an “eternal cosmos” came to be the norm. The new aim of science was to confirm materialist philosophy.

These incorrect ideas have dragged the scientific world into a dead end for the past 150 years. Tens of thousands of scientists from different branches worked in the hope of being able to prove Darwinism or other materialist theories.

But they were disappointed.

The scientific evidence showed the exact opposite of the conclusion they wanted to reach. That is, it confirmed the truth of Creation. Today the world of science is astonished by this truth. When nature is examined it emerges that there is a complex plan and design in every detail and this has cut away the foundations of materialist philosophy.

For example, the extraordinary structure of DNA shows scientists that it is not the result of blind chance or natural laws. The DNA in a single human cell contains enough information to fill a whole 900-volume encyclopedia. Gene Myers, a scientist from the Celera Company which administers the Human Genome Project, says this:

What really astounds me is the architecture of life… The system is extremely complex. It’s like it was designed… There’s a huge intelligence there. 12

This astonishment affects the whole scientific world. Scientists are viewing with surprise the invalidity of the materialist philosophy and Darwinism which they were taught as truth, and some of them are declaring this openly. In his book Darwin’s Black Box, biochemist Michael Behe, one of the leading critics of Darwinism, describes the situation of the scientific world as follows:

Over the past four decades modern biochemistry has uncovered the secrets of the cell. The progress has been hard won. It has required tens of thousands of people to dedicate the better parts of their lives to the tedious work of the laboratory…

The result of these cumulative efforts to investigate the cell-to investigate life at the molecular level-is a loud, clear, piercing cry of “design!” The result is so unambiguous and so significant that it must be ranked as one of the greatest achievements in the history of science…

But, no bottles have been uncorked, no hands clapped. Why does the scientific community not greedily embrace its startling discovery? The dilemma is that while one side of the [issue] is labeled intelligent design, the other side must be labeled God. 13

The same situation exists in astronomy. The astronomy of the twentieth century has demolished the materialist theories of the nineteenth. First with the Big Bang theory, it emerged that the universe had a beginning, the moment of Creation. Since then it has been realized that in the universe there is an extraordinarily delicate balance which protects human life – a concept known as the anthropic principle.

For these reasons, in the world of physics and astronomy atheism is in rapid decline. As American physicist Robert Griffiths jokingly remarks: “If we need an atheist for a debate, I go to the philosophy department. The physics department isn’t much use.” 14

In short, in our day and age materialist philosophy is collapsing. Science is rediscovering certain very important facts rejected by materialist philosophy and in this way a new concept of science is being born. The “Intelligent Design” theory, which has been on a successful rise in the United States during the past 10 years, is a leading part of this new scientific concept. Those who accept this theory stress that Darwinism was the greatest error in the history of science and that there is an intelligent design in nature that gives evidence of Creation.

Conclusion

God created the entire universe, and the whole of creation shows humanity the signs of God. Science is the method of investigating what has been created, so conflict between religion and science – provided that religion is guided only by Divine revelation – is out of the question.

On the contrary, history shows that theism has been the main motive and paradigm for scientific progress. The two greatest scientific achievements in world history – the Islamic scientific endeavor of the Medieval Age and the Christian scientific leap of the modern era – stemmed from faith in God. Moreover, the latter borrowed a great deal of knowledge, method and vision from the former. The wisdom of the Qur’an first enlightened the Islamic world and then shed light even to the non-Muslim Europe. If something went wrong in the Islamic world, this was because Muslims turned away from the sincerity, wisdom and open-mindedness God teaches in the Qur’an.

The materialist paradigm is a deviation from this pattern. It arose in the 19th century, reached its peak in the mid-20th century and is on the brink of collapse today. No matter how arrogant and seemingly self-confident its supporters are, the materialist dogma and its main pillar, Darwinism, will inevitably perish in the upcoming decades.

And science will return to its authentic and true paradigm: A search for the discovery and definition of the great design and harmony in the natural world, the artifact of God.

Soul Sciences: Its Mysterious Philosophy and Worship Method

Yuga Rishi Shriram Sharma Acharya

Within the peel of an onion lies another peel. Within the second peel is a third one. In the same way if banana leaves are removed they come out one after another. The smallest unit of matter is an atom yet although the atom appears single it is not so in actuality. Because within it there is a nucleus and there are neutrons, protons and revolving electrons.

For more scientific e-books visit: http://www.shriramsharma.com/ (GOOGLE PR 4) and http://www.awgp.org/ (Google 5)

The solar system is a circumference but within its limits revolve 9 planets and 43 satellites around their axis. The atom too is like a solar system. Within it is activity akin to the solar system. If a pile of mud is kicked a little bit of mud gets scattered but if the nucleus of an atom is attacked the energy that it emits can bury one huge mountain.

So it is clear that the more gross substances are made subtle, the more powerful they become. There are millions of living cells in our body and the genes that are hidden in every cell have a prototype of one single creature. In this manner within a human body, like the cosmic world, millions of creatures dwell in it. Amongst them only one of them has a chance to enter the mother’s womb during sexual union. Thus one embryo is formed which starts the creation of its separate body and bodily energy. In 9 months the embryo matures and roams in the world after coming out of its mother’s womb.

Within this newborn babe one finds bodily and mental qualities of its parents, grandparents and scores of ancestors. These special qualities in the form of Vibhutis (divine glories) are so subtle that despite the subtle-most disintegration of genes and the life vital force, one cannot understand contemporary circumstances. The situation manifests when the child grows up and gives us a clear indication of its special qualities. This means that those special qualities known when the child grows up is not known in its immature state. By only analyzing the child we cannot know its ancestral nature. Only on its face and skin is there some perceived idea. Subtleness for a long time is maintained in the immature stage and when it starts maturing it gives us an indication of its state and existence.

There is such a big prelude of the subtle in the subtle that the example of the onion peel within an onion peel and the leaves of banana, appear to be very ironic.

If a pile of seeds of different tree varieties are gathered a very minor difference is perceived as far as its color, weight, form etc. is concerned but when the seeds are sown, major differences are perceived right from the shoots, leaves, branches, flowers, fruits etc. There is an obvious difference between mature full grown trees. There is so much difference as far as the shape of flowers, its fragrance and taste of fruits is concerned. Hence all these can be classified differently. This difference is extraordinary. Its differences are veiled in the seed stage and hence cannot be seen in that stage.

The ordinary shapes of the sheaths of the human body are virtually identical but within there are so many mysteries that one is amazed on getting corresponding information about them. The material scientist is researching into only the gross aspect of this analysis unlike spiritual seers.

The anatomists to some extent have studied the eugenics of the different movements of bodily sheaths and how they carry out their different functions. On its basis they carry out medical investigations and surgery. And they also measure the potential and possibilities of the life force of a human being.

But one should deeply look into the fact that the human embryo is not made up of matter only. It is not merely an admixture of chemicals. Because one important aspect of it is consciousness and it is called human electricity. In spiritual parlance it is called Prana or vital force. By itself vital force is one yet because it targets various organs it is named variedly. In the head it functions as faith, hope, habit, thought etc. Its management and analysis is made in the form of mind, intellect and psyche. This very principle, in the organs of knowledge takes the form of shape, taste, smell, touch and sound. In other organs of the body it works digestion, emission, bodily might etc. Through the genitals it tastes sexual passion and thus procreates. The fibers and tendons of every muscle have their own specific function and nature. Both power and wisdom are interwoven in it.

After knowing and understanding the inert and conscious form of the body one concludes that just as the entire tree is potentially found in the seed, so too the entire cosmic principle i.e. the macro is inherent in the body i.e. the micro. We may be able to see only the present form of the cosmos and the body yet the past and future are firmly conjoined to it. The body is like a mirror. If we can fathom its subtle mysterious depth we can only be amazed on understanding and seeing that where, how and to what extent this cosmic pervasive matter and conscious principle is conjoined to the human body.

In reality the small body of a human being is filled up with so many things that one can only say that in comparison to all divine powers put together, man alone is most powerful. But the only problem is that this storehouse of divine energy is in a latent state. In order to experience these powers man needs to undergo intense austerities. If these penances are not carried out these powers will always remain latent and thus he will be incapable of carrying out any higher activity apart from those mundane ones that can be carried out by beasts too. Hence in order to excel spiritually one should follow the path of spiritual penance.

On subtly analyzing bodily sciences one finds all divine glories embedded in every human being. By activating these divine potentialities one can obtain Divine Powers (Sidhis). In the subtle body the 6 Chakras are well-known. They are 1) Mooladhar 2) Svadhishthan 3) Manipur 4) Anahat 5) Vishudhi 6) Ajna. All these are within our body but at a subtle level. Over here the head region is overlooked. Within the scalp is the Sahasrar (1000-petalled lotus) Kamal. If you add this then there are 7 Chakras. Thus you are introduced to the grandeur, i.e. 7 subtle pilgrim spots for pious endeavor in the subtle world. The only requirement is the activation of these subtle Chakras. When the embryo is nourished in the mother’s womb it grows up as a baby and is born later. If a seed is locked up in a room it will not sprout. Only when it is given water, sun and fertile land will it grow into a tree that first bears flowers and then luscious fruits.

The Merudand (subtle spinal cord) is called the royal pathway. It is also called the Devyaan Marg that takes us to heaven from earth. Within this journey are 7 Lokas (subtle worlds). The 7 Lokas in between God and the individual soul are spots of rest. To cover large number of miles during one’s journey, rest is a must. Hence on the way there are rest-houses. A train stops at many stations on the way to replenish the train with coal, water etc. These resting spots of the bodily energy are the 6 Chakras. The Chakras are depicted in 2 ways, one as obstructions and the other as benefactors. In the Mahabharat is the story of a Chakravyuh (an array of soldiers in a complexly designed square or a circle). Abhimanyu was trapped in it. Because he did not know how to come out of it he died. In a Chakravyuh there are 7 ramparts of a fort. Symbolically this incident can be taken as an individual soul being trapped in the 7 Chakras of the body. The Chakras are also said to be the 4 walls of the palace in the form of material attachments, delusions and distortions. Hence a method is given so as to overcome it. There is a story in the Bhagwat Mahatmya with reference to Dhundhukari’s ghost tearing the 7 knots of a bamboo within 7 days so as to become a divinely embodied being. Symbolically this is the journey from one Chakra to the next one.

In spiritual practices the individual has no power of his own. The only special thing is that he is working hard to awaken his latent divine powers. Here one’s own energy is very little and if the austerities are very ordinary it cannot achieve much. An animal instructor of a circus takes only those animals in his troupe whom he thinks are shrewd. All spiritual practices are artistic. It flowers on the foundation stone of devotional sensitivity. Hence a man entering the path of spirituality has to master the viewpoint of his devotional emotions. Also he has to purify and focus his thinking and character. This is the primary condition which must be fulfilled.

Which spiritual practice should be carried out for what time span? The answer is not the same for everyone. Because it depends on each individual’s mental state. If the personality of any individual overflows with soul force, he very quickly, without much effort attains great spiritual benefits. But those pious actions that give all these activities tend to be used up too. This divine power is used for raising the fallen ones, decreasing sorrow, saving those who are drowning and helping all to climb up the ladder of a material life rooted in spiritual values. Instead of austerities one’s pious deeds increase. Thus the balance is maintained and a Yogi / spiritual aspirant leads a pious Sattvic life. His attitude is heavenly and behavior is like one who is spiritually liberated in this very life (Jeevan Mukti). The soul is realized as soul glory and continuously with the help of divine insight he beholds the Lord in every particle of the cosmos. This is the very state as a result of which a person is called supreme amongst men and thus becomes God himself.

But if one’s thoughts and character are not pure, if there is vileness in it and if such a person obtains divine powers, he becomes demonic and arrogant. He carries out such vile actions that he can only be labeled a demon. If wealth, might, grandeur, power are not utilized properly it can lead to a person’s downfall. When grapes deteriorate they are converted to wine. In the same way even if you attain divine powers and if the same is not utilized for pious activities the only alternative remains is that it will be utilized for destructive purposes. If spirituality does not follow the Dakshin Marg (pious path) it will lead to one’s downfall. Vile actions by Tantric Aghoris, Kapaliks etc. become demonic like Maran (killing people with Mantra chanting), Mohan Vashikaran (hypnotism) and Ucchatan (distracting a person’s mind by incantation). Demons generally are the attacking types and kidnap innocent people. Examples of such demons are Vritrasur, Hiranyakashipu, Mahisasur, Kansa, Ravan etc. Their family members like Khar-Dooshan, Kumbhkaran, Meghnad, Hiranyaksha, Jarasandh and Raktabeej too behaved demonically. The demons harassed the demigods. They looted the wealth of the demigods and drank the blood of the Rishis. They just harassed their subjects and for a little bit of selfish gain they performed many vile actions.

There are 2 classes of demons. One class is unruly, attacking and of the terrorist type. The other class uses deception, cunningness, illusory black magic power etc. The attacking demons show off their daring and the black magic demons praise their art of deception. The attacking demons are looked down upon openly but the black magic demons are hidden behind the veil of facades. In fact the shrewd demons behave like saints externally. One such example is Kalnemi. Although he was a family member of Ravan he never attacked anybody externally. Instead he would induce the intellect of others via black magic to perform vile actions. Such people could not only fail to ward off a downfall but that they would drown deeper into the quagmire of lowly deeds.

One may gather divine powers but if they are not used for pious deeds (like Kalnemi) one will carry out subtle demonic activities. In it there is no fear of being defamed in spite of terrorist activities because under the pretext of being saintly externally one escapes defamation albeit for a certain span of time. Hence modern demonic behavior in the field of Kundalini (Divine Serpent Power) is available in the bazaar under the “trademark”of Kalnemi and is sold as basketfuls within minutes.

True soul power can only be generated if one is on the sacred path of righteousness. In it lies the well-being of all individuals and thus the entire world. The true philosophy of soul science is that although one carries out spiritual austerities whatever divine power manifests in the form of Sidhis must be used only for righteous purposes and world welfare.

Grossly one should understand that circumstances influence the state of our devotional sentiments. We are influenced by all that takes place in the external world. But the ideology of Spiritual Science has delved more deep into this and it says that the individual consciousness influences nearby and far off worldly situations. Man is the author of his own destiny, but the fact is this that in an advanced spiritual state he is the director of cosmic activities too. Regarding this it can definitely be understood that one can cast the equipments related to the inner and outer areas according to one’s psyche. In a very advanced spiritual state such a person can even direct cosmic movements. This is called extrasensory power or ESP. This is the Super Mind state which is ordinarily present in all beings but in a latent inactive state. How can it be activated? How can it be empowered? And how can it be utilized for various tasks? This is called Soul Science. It is also called Brahmavidya. Kundalini practice is executed so as to activate our soul force.

In a forest near Lakshadweep dwelt 4 sages. For begging alms they crossed the ocean waters and gave spiritual discourses to the householders. One among the 4 sages was very shrewd. He had learnt how to walk on water by pasting his feet with some potent herbs. The other 3 sages swam in water but this shrewd sage would walk on it. People who saw the latter sage thought him to be a realized saint. Hence people would listen to his talks only and gave him costly presents.

Slowly the secret was divulged. The shrewd devotees insisted that they would wash the feet on the 4 sages with hot water. Thus the herbal paste on the so called “great” saint was wiped off. He did not know how to swim. Hence out of shame he left he group of sages and ran away. Moral: Facades never last long however shrewd.

The Sciences and the Nose in Bible and Quran

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Prof.dr. Ibrahim Khalil

Before dealing with the topic of the “Nose” in Quran versus Bible versus sciences, it is mandatory to remember that the total words in the Bible are 788,280 while the total words in the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible is more than 10 times the Quran word-wise.

The Nose is mentioned 19 times in the Bible and only once in the Quran, i.e. the Bible mentions the Nose 19 times more than the Quran

In other words, the Bible has the potential of more than 10 times (word-wise) and 19 times (subject-wise) than the Quran to talk about the Nose.

The Nose in the Bible:

The Lord will put his hook in your nose and his bit in your mouth

I wonder, does the Lord have a hook and a bit?

2 Kings 19:28

Because you rage against me and your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.’

Isaiah 37:29

Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.

The rights of the blemish and handicapped!

The rights of the blind man, or a lame, or he that has a flat nose: Do not approach

Leviticus 21:18

For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous,

The king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner, put a hook in his nose.

It is Biblical method to catch and arrest people.

It is by putting a hook in the arrested one.

2 Chronicles 33:11

So the LORD brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner, put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon.

Can anyone capture him and pierce his nose?

It seems likely that the Bible considers it as an impossible thing!

Job 40:24

Can anyone capture him by the eyes, or trap him and pierce his nose?

Can you put a cord through his nose?

Job 41:2

Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook.

They have noses but they cannot smell;

This may occurs in the course of many diseases of the nose

Psalm 115:6

They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell;

Twisting the nose produces blood!

Proverbs 30:33

For as churning the milk produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife.”

Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon looking toward Damascus.

Song of Solomon 7:4

Your neck is like an ivory tower. Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon by the gate of Bath Rabbim. Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon looking toward Damascus.

thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;

Song of Solomon 7:8

I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;

I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose

Isaiah 65:5

Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

Look at them putting the branch to their nose!

Ezekiel 8:17

He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the house of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually provoke me to anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose!

The outcome of the jealous anger of the Lord!

They will cut off your noses and your ears. They will take away your sons and daughters, and those of you who are left will fall by the sword and consumed by fire.

Ezekiel 23:25

I will direct my jealous anger against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and your ears, and those of you who are left will fall by the sword. They will take away your sons and daughters, and those of you who are left will be consumed by fire.

Stop the noses of the passengers

Ezekiel 39:11

And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.

The Nose ring

The Bible talks about Nose ring in five verses.

Genesis 24:22

When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels.

Genesis 24:30

As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring.

Genesis 24:47

“I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ “She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ “Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms,

Isaiah 3:21

the signet rings and nose rings,

Ezekiel 16:12

And I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head.

The Nose in the Quran:

Allah has written in Torah that a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds equal retaliation, but whosoever forgoes it as a freewill offering, it will be expiation for him. Whoever does not judge according to what Allah has sent down are the wrong-doers.

The Bible does not talk about whosoever forgoes the Law a freewill offering and its reward in the afterlife!

Surah 5:45

QARIB: we have written for them a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds equal retaliation, but whosoever forgoes it as a freewill offering, it will be an expiation for him. whoever does not judge according to what allah has sent down are the harmdoers.

SHAKIR: and we prescribed to them in it that life is for life, and eye for eye, and nose for nose, and ear for ear, and tooth for tooth, and (that there is) reprisal in wounds; but he who foregoes it, it shall be an expiation for him; and whoever did not judge by what allah revealed, those are they that are the unjust

PICKTHAL: and we prescribed for them therein: the life for the life, and the eye for the eye, and the nose for the nose, and the ear for the ear, and the tooth for the tooth, and for wounds retaliation. but whoso forgoeth it (in the way of charity) it shall be expiation for him. whoso judgeth not by that which allah hath revealed: such are wrong-doers.

YUSUFALI: we ordained therein for them: “life for life, eye for eye, nose or nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal.” but if any one remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. and if any fail to judge by (the light of) what allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) wrong-doers.

It should be emphasized that the Torah’s law that is mentioned in four verses never says “Nose for Nose”.

The law says: Life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, wound for wound BUT never says Nose for Nose.

However, in the Quran Allah has written in Torah that a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose etc.

Back to the main topic of my series of articles (1- 65); this is my question to you smart readers: “Is the Quran quoted from the Bible “? And which book contradicts with sciences?

Bible Versus Quran Versus Sciences, (65) the Nose

They have noses but they cannot smell;

This may occurs in the course of many diseases of the nose

Psalm 115:6

They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell;

Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon looking toward Damascus.

thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;

Song of Solomon 7:8

I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;

Learn How to Build Hovercraft Models for a Science Project

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Every year your science class teacher would probably ask you to build something out of the principles being imparted in class. So your school comes up with an annual science project. The objective of science projects is to be able to clearly display the principles of a particular branch in this course. So you came up with an idea to build hovercraft models using the applications of physics.

Physics is one the major branches of science that when expanded reveals countless applications. From engineering to simple daily occurrences, this is one of the favorite discussions in a science class. The hovercraft, although not commonly used in urban transportation means, is a perfect example. And so you’re off to a good start.

What you need is to know the materials you could use. Understanding how to build hovercraft vehicles is the same with any vessel of this type. To come up with one for your project is simply improvising the materials and bringing the applied science to its miniature version. As mentioned, the objective is to show the principles.

Here are the basic things you will need:

1. Platform – You can use a wooden disk about the size of a manhole cover. You want a science project that is portable and easy to carry. So keep the size handy. This is probably the biggest in your hovercraft project.

2. Leaf blower or vacuum cleaner – You will use this to supply air flow into your platform. You may use any other gadget as long as you can put the air flow in reverse but this is the easiest to find. Your build hovercraft model must follow the air cushion system of the actual hovercraft.

3. Bendable plastic sheet – This will act as your craft’s improvised skirt. The skirt is supposed to trap air below your platform. When doing so, it builds pressure and thus creates a cushion of air. Because of the plastic sheet’s elastic properties, it will only allow limited air to disperse out of its contained space.

4. Fasteners – Use fasteners such as bolts and nuts to fasten all these materials together.

5. A detailed illustration of your science project hovercraft – To do this, you need to check on other hovercraft kits. Learn the principles. The components should be similar to the materials you have. For example, the fanning system in actual hovercrafts is represented by your leaf blower. The hovercraft hull is you platform disk and so on.

All these things above you will need for the project. Your hovercraft project should be able to carry a real person. Of course you can’t guarantee it could carry anyone who is heavier than you. Use your weight as a basis. That is why the platform is suggested to be the size of a manhole cover for this purpose. Last but not least, remember to always pay attention to you science teacher in class.

Funding for Science

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

NARA

No country is against the development of science and scientific research.

It has been recognized by everyone that without science there is no development.

Therefore, promotion of scientific research in all area is taken up seriously.

Research both in basic and applied sciences is essential to achieve national and international developments.

In fact, basic science is costly as compared to the applied science.

In a recent article on science for sustainable development published in Current Science (Curr. Sci.) Dr. I. P. Abrol mentioned that low level of funding is frequently cited as one of the major factors for the declining state of science in India.

Not only Dr. Abrol, many other Indian scientists used to tell the same ‘low level funding’ for the poor science in India.

It was the state of affair once, but now the situation is considerable improved.

All branches of science, agriculture, engineering, medicine, veterinary, biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology do not suffer from ‘low level of funding’ nowadays.

In fact, most of the research institutions are not able to spend the allocated fund for scientific research in time.

Anyway much of the fund goes for salaries, some for the upkeep of the building and other infrastructures and the rest only is used for scientific research.

In the name of research projects funded by various foreign agencies and also the Government of India itself, amounts to over funding sometimes.

I still remember some of the World Bank funded projects in Agricultural Sciences.

Crores of rupees allotted to Agricultural Universities and National Agricultural Research Institutes.

In addition to it large number of projects in the name of National Fellows and Professor of Eminence are also in place.

Plenty of money for science, but no one appears to appreciate these good days of science.

We are certainly well off as far as the funding position for science is concerned.

We all know that the project fund is mostly spent for buying costly equipments which are invariably imported from foreign countries.

These instruments cost lakhs of rupees.

So, there are series of procedures to be followed for buying these equipments.

Tenders are called, opened, compared, placed orders, credited the amount in a bank and finally received the instruments.

Sometimes the scientist who placed order forgets to include a small piece of accessory for operating or maintaining the instrument.

While the instrument is installed, such mistakes are found out and intimated to the scientist by the installing engineers of the Sales Company.

They start thinking about the mistake so late and make a representation to the funding agency to sanction additional amount required for the missed accessory.

It take awful lot of time to get a positive reply, till then the instrument remains as a dead elephant in a corner of the laboratory which are not generally rat-proof and not even air- conditioned.

By that time the sanction for the additional amount reaches, and the accessory bought, the main instrument is damaged by rats which are fond of the pleasant smell of the plastic wires and chips attached within the instrument.

What I describe here may look like a story, but it is really not a fiction, but a fact which is always untold, kept secret and hidden.

Generally, no one question our scientists because they are in a higher scale of pay and position enjoying the perquisites offered by the government.

By that time, the senior scientist either retires or gets transferred to another institute.

The poor equipment becomes an orphan and no one takes care of it in that non-working condition.

Thus the fund for science is wasted once for all.

These dreams are known to the administrative officers and the comptrollers.

They try to underestimate the credibility of the scientists.

But that is generally taken as professional jealousy.

Anyway this is one side of the whole affair.

In the other side, the allotted fund is not properly released to the scientist to spend for his project unless and until he meets the administrative rules for buying the equipment.

If the Director or the administrative officer does not like a particular scientist, then the story becomes very serious.

Thus the fund is not spent within the stipulated time of the famous March end.

Knowing such difficulties scientists try to spend the allotted fund urgently by placing orders for easily available items such as steel almyrahs, fans, air-conditioners, refrigerators, plastic chairs, hot plates, room heaters, computers etc., etc.,

When I was a student and later a staff I could see truck loads of steel almyrahs, book cases, and refrigerators unloaded in science departments towards the end of March every year.

It looked very strange to me, but later on I could understand the circumstances under which they are bought.

Funding science is done by every government every year.

Who looks into the spending aspects of the funds?

Also who looks into the scientific research results due to such levels of funding?

The spending aspect is always looked into by the auditors checking the bills, dates and the correctness of spending according to the government audit rules.

The scientific research based on the funding and the equipments are not strictly monitored, although it is said that there are many committees established for this sake.

The outcome of scientific findings should have a direct bearing on the fund spent and the scientific instruments used.

But invariably most of the scientific research ends up in reports and publications either in Indian journals or in few so called international journals which are very rarely read by other scientists.

Sustainable science activity is desired by retired scientists, but I doubt that is possible to achieve.

Most of the scientific researchers are fed up over time and their thinking is outmoded.

They started with a sharp thinking in handling problems basic or applied, but over time their thinking lose the sharpness.

If you talk to any senior or junior scientists today, they spend more time in discussing their administrative difficulties rather than their scientific output.

Even if they talk about their outputs which will be a repetitive work or some one’s results confirmed.

These are facts every one of us – scientists – fully know.

Some of these facts are fashionably written in Curr. Sci. published by Indian Academy of Sciences.

When I read those comments, I feel very sad because this journal is found in libraries of almost all Universities of the world and also in the net free of cost.

The publishers of Curr. Sci. escapes cleverly saying that all articles published in Curr. Sci. especially editorials, opinions and commentaries, letters and book reviews are deemed to reflect the individual views of the authors and not the official points of view, either of the Current Science Association or of the Indian Academy Sciences.

Those who read Curr. Sci. journal knows very well the views of various scientists expressed in the ‘Correspondence’ section.

Exposing the setbacks in scientific world of India is a welcome step, but I do not know by doing so how many are rectified so far?

All the setbacks expressed make good reading, sometimes they are funny too.

The contents of the Correspondence section continue to be the same setbacks for the past decades and I hope it may be for the future decades too.

In a country like India, science and scientific research are not treated the way they have to be treated.

They are in the hands of the auditors who are not scientists but they count the money not the outcome of science.

In their eyes, whether one is scientist, business man or anybody – all are thieves.

Their job is only to find out the mistakes committed in spending the fund.

They do not know some of those mistakes are to be committed to carry out scientific research.

But who has to change the Government Secretariat administration which is still the same inherited from the British?

A new administration is absolutely needed for scientific institutions for better utilization of fund.

Indian science will remain with the same setbacks of the past decades forever if we follow the same set of account rules.

I feel it is an urgent matter the science administrators of Government of India have to look into seriously for the benefit of science in India.
